I go back further than you as I used to watch The Yardbirds regularly at Eel Pie Island in Twickenham and it was obvious in those days what a talent he was.

I also watched The Graham Bond Organisation and they had a rather talented red haired drummer at the time too

i agree bobby whitlock's influence and backing vocals do a LOT for Layla, as do duane allman' slide guitar. But a totally underrated part of the band is jim gordon's drumming. In my opinion he is what makes Little Wing a good song. People don't mention him because he turned out to be a complete psychopath.

As for gallagher vs clapton they are completely different. Gallagher's energy and driving guitar can't really be compared to clapton's 'slow hand'. Both equally good in different ways
