It was short sighted and we nearly paid the price we had absolutely no steel in midfield and he wasn't adequately replaced until January. If that's your model for a good bit of business I say we keep him.

Hughes hasn't played PL football he is as much of a risk as anyone else who isn't a proven quantity. Teams would also be able to hold us to ransom if we sold McArthur because they would know we would be short in the middle and would have to pay up.

Jedinak was a fading force in the PL and not the Jedinak of old.We got £4 Mill for him and of course we got in Luka who was just what we needed.

Jedinak may have been slightly on the wane and yes we did get £4m for him.
However we failed to replace him immediately and suffered badly until we eventually bought Milivojević.
In hindsight we would have done better to keep Jedinak until we had found an ideal replacement.

Jedinak was good business. The fact that we didn't replace him until January lies the problem. I'd sell mcarthur and dann. If we bought in sufficient replacements. Then there's no big drama. If we bought in another midfield ideally we want better than what we got. Mcarthur has 12 months left and if villa offered us anything above the 8m we spend a couple of seasons ago. We'd be foolish not sell. Fans talk about going to the next level. Imagine we bought in 2 midfielders Ziyech and yann m'villa for example . Where would this mcarthur, I'd say surplus to requirements.

The problem lies with puncheon. Personally he should leave before mcarthur but due to him being well loved by the chairman and fans. Extremely unlikely to leave and contribution of 0 goals from midfield is disgusting. Therefore if 2 midfielder are bought in then mcarthur may have to leave.

I agree with all this except for the one point - highlighted. I think you'll find most people (except Pardew) were arguing for a decent replacement last August rather than hindsight and we got ... Flamini, who never played!!

... what

Imagine selling mcarthur to bring in hernadez who was a 13m release clause to leave Bayern Leverkusen.

Yep, Jedi, much as I loved him, was going to have to be replaced. An Luka is exactly the player to do that - same kind of steel, more skill and more talent.

The only problem was probably the three months of so between selling Jedi and bringing in Luka. We lacked a good defensive midfielder and it probably cost Pardew his job (I can't imagine the Swansea 5-4 with Jedi or the 3-2 Burnley or 3-3 Hull).
