I posted this elsewhere in an unrelated thread in Transfer Talk but thought I'd copy it here too as the following are extracts from the thread in January when we were rumoured to be signing Sakho

Petereagle

Turns out he has a dismal track record on fitness diet and attitude. Stay well clear I say, talented player but....

Baldfella

No ta want the ex Juve player please!

Y Ddraig Goch

He is a bloody nightmare

Paperhat

"unsure about joining a club in a relegation struggle"
equals
give up after 2 defeats.

Eagles911

Leave well alone IMO he's not even a great player, so prone to making mistakes and if we get him I think it will be a big mistake on our part!

Hrolf The Ganger

Not sure why we need this guy. Is Sam going to play with three center halves?

OknotOK

£20m? For a player who Liverpool have said won't play for them again and who hasn't played a single minute of competitive league football for over 6 months?
And then after that to have to pay him >£105k a week (presumably the same for a loan deal)?
Doesn't sound like something we'll be doing this window.

Mstrobez

Sako for 20mil would be insanity. Looks like he's gonna fall over every time he gets the ball, very rash, agreed he looks like there is potential but right now he is not what we need and especially not for a sum of 20 mil.

Mstrobez

Liverpool have supposedly been terrible at the back all season, why can't he get in? Even when Matip is unavailable?
Not saying I haven't seen glimpses, or he couldn't be a success with coaching but not for 20mil - that would be utter madness.

Bexley Eagle

Total madness to buy a potentially disruptive influence or someone high maintenance for £20 mil. Just bonkers.

Mstrobez

Whatever the circumstances, I agree with everyone saying loan with buy option is the best way to go.. 20 Million would be an absolutely huge risk and an absurd amount to just spend on a player who looks shaky every time he plays, did well in Europa league last season and as I've said there is definitely a player there but has a lot of work to do and looks shaky everytime the ball comes to him in the games I've watched.. IMO we need something a lot more reliable if we're to spend that type of money in the predicament we're in

Matteo

Any team paying 20 million for a center back is in the wrong.
Buying Sakho for 20 million is just silly, even for Premier League prices.

Gyro1780 – ( this one is just for a laugh)

He won't be £20m in the summer. January's prices are always higher. I'm guessing will be somewhere around £12m-£15m

Can you now do a list of those who thought Remi was a good loan?

This is a rumour that simply cannot be ignored. We all know that Parish can hold his nerve in a deal. Just see how he handled the purchase of the club as an example. He's not afraid to go right down to the wire.

As I posted about a month ago on a different thread :

My feeling on this is that every 10 years or so a player comes along who can change a whole club. Viera for Arsenal, Keane for Man Utd, Terry for Chelsea.

Sakho can be that player for us. It is not just the player's performances on the pitch that count. It is the fact that just having that player in the dressing room improves other players, makes them feel more confident.

In addition - as for the players named above - they make sure that their team-mates are protected, not bullied by other teams' "hard men".

This is why the fee for Sakho is not just about the player, it is about what he brings to the team and the club as a whole.

I would also make him captain.

According to Wikipedia:

The Remi were a Belgic people of north-eastern Gaul (Gallia Belgica). The Romans regarded them as a civitas, a major and influential polity of Gaul,[1] The Remi occupied the northern Champagne plain, on the southern fringes of the Forest of Ardennes, between the rivers Mosa (Meuse) and Matrona (Marne), and along the river valleys of the Aisne and its tributaries the Aire and the Vesle.

So yeah, a sh*t loan.

Also agree. I know it's not my money that I'm proposing gets spent, but there's not one player in football I would want us to sign more than this guy. We've even done a "try before you buy".

there is one player id prefer, messi, but not gonna happen, so yeah.

I think too, he could change our fortunes and help us become that bigger club we all hope to become, all the sooner.

I reckon we will get Sakho and a goalie and probably miss Chambers, even though he wouldd be a great addition.
Sakho tops the list especially sub £20M.

Sakho was a great fit here....it was obvious that the club wanted him.

Still, financial realities are real. The team has issues all over the team and 30 million is just too much.

I'd love Sakho but I'm worried about our goalkeeper and striker situation.

This may happen but would obviously make a huge dent if not obliterate our budget. Possibly him, Adrian and a loan (possibly abroad) for a striker. But who knows this is Palace and we may spend more than we all think we are going to

His knee went after eight games for us. Imagine if we blow 30 million on him and it went again....Regardless I mean could we actually do 30 million under the financial rules anyway and still bring in a keeper and striker loan?
