Scott Dann is by far the best defender at the club...... Jury still out on Tompkins..... Delaney past his sell by..... Ward gives the ball away too much..... Kelly did ok as a fill in, though not a Premier League quality central defender.

Even when Sam was in charge Dec to Feb didn't he play and we still couldn't pick up a win until Sakho was fit.

My thoughts are that Dann and Tompkins are equally as good as each other. However, I don't think they work well together as a pairing. Both work with Sakho and Delaney and even Kelly - but together I'm not sure it works? Perhaps we will see this season if they can compliment each other or not, but I have my doubts?

If you ask me Scotty is our best defender. That's why he was in contention for a spot in the England team. Kelly is terrible but sakho made him look good! Don't get me wrong tomkins is good too but damn is definitely better

Dann is most definitely not captain material. Was like a rabbit in the headlights last season in our terrible run.

He was injured for a while in fairness, to then automatically be deemed as inferior to a player who looked shocking first half of the season is a little bit unfair. Especially when he had Sakho next to him.

Agree with the OP - people forget just how good he was in his first couple of seasons - probably the best centre half we've had this decade (until Sakho joined). Tomkins is by no means a bad player, and it's definitely a close contest, but any talk of selling is madness - what would we really get for a 30 year old Scott Dann? A few mil? He's worth more than that to us, even if it is as 3rd choice. As for the captaincy - surely it has to be Punch? Stepped up brilliantly last year, and clearly the natural leader in the group.

Puncheon needs to be dropped if we are to progress. We've been crying out for a number 10 since chamakh left.
