Best dust off that old 3-speed Raleigh that's sitting in your garage should they happen to 'come for you'......

I don't think the lost revenue will be as bad as people make out. Rather than importing oil there will be a shift in purchasing electricity produced in the UK. The saving people make is likely to be spent elsewhere withing the UK economy too. Gradual change would also help minimise the impact. Should the government start putting induction loops into the carriageway they could charge electric vehicles that use them too.

Fuel Duty raises about £28b but in addition there would be an extra substantial sum raised from the Vat on fuel.

That daft old bat Caroline Lucas was on the lunchtime news today and when she was asked how the Government would make up the loss all she could manage was "I'm sure they will think of something"

Not "vehicles" just cars and vans whilst the biggest polluters - buses and lorries are exempt

Think its time to increase my shareholding in National Grid....

According to the founder of Tesla, Elon Musk, we're all living in a Simulation anyway. So who cares?!

He has some very odd ideas but as a forward thinker he's amongst the best.

With a bit of luck and a following wind the Tesla S is one of two cars on my shortlist for my next car next year

If you die in the Matrix you die in real life too. So there is that.

Marvellous how a politician can ban things forty years in the future.

Would Mr Gove like to impart more of his knowledge about the year 2057?

For example how will the brexit transition phase be progressing?

Probably wrong but didn't we hit peak oil a while back? Is it not then feasible that oil reserves will be very low in 40 years leading me to think it's not an environmental issue for the government but one of fuel.

As a geologist said to me once, "at $30/bbl (the price at the time) we're running out of oil; at $100/bbl, there's oil everywhere."

The rise of fracking and then the dramatic improvements thereto vastly increased recoverable reserves from areas deemed uneconomic. The reason OPEC crashed the price was the shut down the US oil industry that had turn the US, in 2015, into a net exporter of oil. We're already self-sufficient in natural gas and already now exporting LNG.

Ironically, the first LNG export facilities happened relatively quickly, because they were originally meant to be import facilities. Fracking changed all that, so they flipped the plans and now we're an exporter of energy. Imagine that 5 years ago!

Oil is used for a myriad of purposes, not just fuelling and lubricating machinery, so there will still be demand in the petrochemical field. Oil is a very simple and easy way to store and transport energy; much easier than electricity or natural gas. Also, I think we're a long way away from an electric passenger (or military) aeroplane. There's plenty of room for oil in the energy landscape of the future, we'll just use a lot less of it which is good because it's still finite, regardless of the price.
