Technology will eventually solve the issues with mass advertising. Though in of itself that promotes smaller and smaller exposures to the outside world. That is its own problem itself.

Edited by Stirlingsays (13 Sep 2017 3.23pm) I'm inclined to agree, issues such as eating disorders and relation to body image do have a relationship, and I think this is a 'conversation' society needs to have, but the idea of banning x because it has a correlation to y is a) not going to resolve the issue of eating disorders and b) only going to result in further problems (because you can find correlations everywhere). I think the promotion of ideal body shapes does impact disoders like Anorexia, but these are more complicated than just a casual link to artificial constructions of beauty, and also have far deeper factors involved around identity (Primarily in self perception, as anorexics do see themselves as fat to a pathological delusional level). I do agree though that restriction on advertising that is harmful to society should be applied (as we have done this already with smoking and alcohol), but that restriction in terms of 'body image' is maybe too vague and relates to a far wider issue within fashion and modelling industry that is restricted to a very unreasonable body type (esp the fashion industry). What strikes me as odd, is how many of these 'attractive women in their underwear' adverts are selling stuff to women, rather than me.

I think a society that allows, nay even promotes self reflection and criticism is a healthy one. Every worldview needs to stick its chin out and take blows and argue its corner from any other worldview. When we see writers being restricted or banned we know that a society is repressing its own people.

They sell to the highest interest areas I suppose. We all fit some and not others. For me...I was never into the car thing.....Not into the alcohol thing either.....the variety of life....as we know some men look at attractive women in underwear not because they want to get into the women, but because they want to get into the underwear.
