If we were in the 18 th century they wouldn't have known what that meant.

You seem sure of yourself on that.

Which bit wouldn't they understand?

Woodpile, as that would be something the servants dealt with.

Very good.

It does make you wonder what sort of world this woman comes from if she uses or even knows phrases like that.

Planet Upper Middle Class presumably.

Yep.

Type of thing of thing my father-in-law would say. Ex-colonial, African servants that sort of thing, and Sedburgh educated. Nice fella though.

We have gotten on extremely well for 16 years now. He doesn't live in the past like some.

It is about a person/people. Relates to Freedmen and escaping slaves/ex-slaves fleeing to safe states before getting lynched by the Southern lot post American Civil War by hiding amongst logs.

If that is true and I have no reason to doubt you then I apologise wholeheartedly. I am an old git and never knew that I truly believed it was about wood!

Thank you CPFC2010 for keeping me interested in football, for me no Palace no football either. Come on you Eagles.

He's being polite I expect, ex-colonials like him have manners and are discrete in their opinions.

Genuine question albeit probably naive....are there any current 'colonials' or are they all 'ex-colonials'? If the latter, when did the last one become an 'ex'?

Any colonial historians in the HOL house?

The UK still has colonies, I believe (Falklands, Gibraltar). Colonials tends to refer to people who 'were born there'. Hence, George Orwell was a Colonial because he was British but Burma born.

David Gower was born in India.

OK. So Kermit's father-in-law will have been born in a colony that subsequently ceased to be one, hence the 'ex' refers to the current status of the birthplace and not (say) the former residence or lifestyle of the individual.
