It must have to be seriously tiny to be bothered about a fictional kids' tv character being a woman.

Dr Who has always been a bit of a barometer of British attitudes, or at least, those thrust upon us, so I think it's a reasonable discussion.
One could argue that all TV is garbage and a waste of life.

You're entitled to your view. Unlike you, I'm not going to lose sleep over what colour bond is, or if his hair cut or inside leg measurements match the book, i'll leave that to you. I've seen every Bond film and I'll continue to do so without a list of requirements going in.

Bond is a bit different. He's an Ian Fleming character and he's described as white....what is it... Scottish father and Swiss mother...pretty detailed.

Like Shaft it would be a bit off going against that. Shaft being black is kind of the point....Mind you it could be done....I mean you can be Scottish and Swiss and identify as English and not be white of course.

I'm not against the idea in principle...But it is going against the books.....Still, as long as it wasn't done for tokenism

Meritocracy.

I recall watching 'Doctor Who' with William Hartnell when it first came out in 1963.
My wife has told me she used to get very frightened at times and used to hide behind the settee !

How much sleep you or I get is beside the point. James Bond is a White man because the books say so. No Black man could play Bond in the same way that no White man could play Shaft.

TV is like music.

Most of it most of the time is throwaway rubbish. But occasionally gems fall out of the sky and transcend the time period they were written in.

Or some b0llocks like that.

It's just entertainment. If you have something more entertaining to do then do that I say.
Sometimes it's just less effort to watch TV and real people become a lot less appealing once you get past 50.

I certainly take your heritage points, though the average cinema goer, in part because Bond has been played by several actors, may be just as likely to describe characteristics of bond as suave, sophisticated, ladies man and so on. From that perspective I can see how that might not always align with a particular colour.

I admit that I liked the possibility of Idris Elba getting the nod, but as I say, I like the franchise - and the stories many of which it's worth mentioning are completely different from the books - so I'll be sticking with it come what may!

You're think you'd unearthed a religious text. There are many US movies where white Americans play what are 'in the books' non white foreign characters. It doesn't bother me. For uniformity I assume you were outraged?

It sounds like there's only one shaft you're interested in, and that's bonds.

He could not be Bond in any universe. He can barely speak properly let alone be a suave spy. Denzel Washington might have pulled it off.

True....the books are a different thing to films....license and all that....license to thrill so to speak.

I think Idris Elba is a bit old now...He's a talent though....Maybe a one off film. Fassbender or Cavill would be pretty strong....Mind you they are getting on a bit as well....Perhaps it's time for some younger talent.

It's an iconic role, as long as they get it right....they did with Craig.

Since you are such a fan yourself I think you might be projecting.
