That was all Napoleon’s fault.

Right because you said not all opinions are equal not all opinions about conspiracy theories aren’t equal. So all other opinions are equal.

Are you really finding it hard to understand or just trying to be contentious?

You can hold whatever opinion you like on anything you wish. If you want to be an idiot then that's your right. That though won't change any of them into a fact. It's seeking to present things that are clearly just theories, and often pretty wild ones, as being as valid as opinions based on solid scientific factual evidence that is what I am referring to.

The problem with scientific fact as the basis for all opinion is that it is subject to change which leads to cognitive dissonance in many non-idiots.

Being peer-reviewed and accepted as valid gives it the authenticity to be treated seriously.

Of course scientific knowledge is expanding, especially in pioneering areas, but there are many things which are settled facts and it is these that I am primarily addressing.

When these are regarded as having equivalence to wild conspiracy theories dreamed up by a nutcase at a keyboard we ought to call it out.

Do you believe any of the popular conspiracy theories which are doing the rounds?

In fact, it would be interesting to do a poll on here to get people to rate, by percentage, the likelihood of some of these being true. It would be quite instructive!

No, I’m not particularly interested in conspiracy theories. I prefer to see a little generally accepted evidence if not actual proof; this is one reason I struggle with religion.
There are too many fields for which actual proof is almost impossible to provide: economics, politics, sociology, psychology and several others. History is open to interpretation, in Britain we regard Trafalgar as a defining victory - in France they think of it as an inconclusive battle in which they killed our admiral.

It's a pleasure to agree with all of that.

There's plenty of room for a variety of opinions in many fields, some logical and some bizarre. In my own opinion of course!

What's disturbing about most conspiracy theories is that they are presented as fact and not as a remote possibility.

Perhaps someone on here with more knowledge on the subject could explain. My guess is that conspiracy theories are often accepted as they fulfil a human need for comfort by imposIng order instead of accepting random events.

There are plenty of rational explanations on the web. Try this one:-

Interesting. The Kennedy assassination is probably the biggest and does seem to involve some inconsistencies but so many people would have been involved it’s hard to see how it could have been kept secret so long.

I think that is a good summation.

I suspect there is also little of the "in the know vanity". The conspiracy theorists believe they have found out stuff the rest of us drones have missed so presumably this makes them superior.

For you to think anything said about Trump is harsh is quite a compliment.
