I thought for a while that Lee Hills would become a regular first team player . Made his debut at just 17 and looked the real deal .
His career seems to have gone south ever since . Last I heard is now playing non league .

Yes Lee Hills comes to mind. But he had a serious injury where he eventually couldn5 make it into the Stevenage side. Like Martin Hinchelwood, injury stole these players.

I always thought tackleberry and Hightower would go on and do great things.

Another +1 for Sean Scannell.

I met him once outside Revolutions in Sutton when I was pissed at about 3am. Saw a bloke with dreads walking past and told all my mates "that's Sean Scannell". Of course them all being Arsenal and Chelsea they didn't have a clue who that was. So I shouted up the road "OI SEAN!" and he turned around, ditched the bird he was chatting up and we had a chat for about 5 minutes about Palace, very down to earth guy.

It was only the next morning when I woke up with a terrible hangover that I remembered we had a game on Saturday and I'm pretty sure he was on the subs bench!

I heard from friends that Scannell was a really cocky guy and being a footballer sort of got to his head (just what I heard). I think I've heard similar about Lee Hills and obviously there were the cases of Bostock and Ashley Paul Robinson. On the flip side you never heard anything attitude related about the ones that went on to have more success; Moses, Watson, Clyne or Zaha apart from a bit of tabloid crap when Wilf was at Man U.

Scannells not had a bad career at all but it may be a case of too much too young in his case that stopped him from going on to anything more than a squad player in the Championship.

Years ago, when my son was young we often used to wait outside the ground to get the players to sign my boys program.

I remember after one game Scannell and Moses were there and they would didn’t even acknowledge my son or any of the other kids. I ended calling Moses a little t***. All I could think of was all the money myself and my family had put into the club over the years and they act like you don’t even exist.

Lucky a couple of minutes later faith was restored when Speroni and Fonte appeared and both made sure they spoke to everyone and signed anything. Neither could have been nicer.

OK, this one is a name that has always stuck in my head more of a case of `Who` rather than `Wow` was back when we were in Administration after Goldburg, away to Stockport County (I think)evening kick off, only a handful of Palace fans and the tannoy announces a Crystal Palaace substitute coming on.....Chris Sharpling. Met with a chorus of `Who`, from the Palace faithful, followed by desperate searching in the program. Everyone shrugged their shoulders. Took about 10 minutes until we realized the colour of his shirt name and number was different to everyone else's. Yep, that's how skint we were then!

Wayne routledge for me - looked unbelievable when coming through and to be fair was good when he made the first team sadly just another one who thought the grass was greener at white hart lane!!

He's not really done too badly though has he having played for Spurs, Aston Villa, QPR, Newcastle and Swansea?

The 'academy' ethos is overrated. Only a small percentage ever 'graduates'. Better to cut one's losses and put the time, energy and money into alternative ways of finding players.

Danny Light. Must have been around 1968. I thought he was great, but it's possible that he wasn't. He disappeared. Could be anywhere.
