An interesting post Dave. FdB does have everything to prove in the PL, and if he gets it wrong we will certainly be in deep trouble (again)! So far as I can gather the person who wanted a change in playing style was Parish. Perhaps he had had enough of being deep in the doo do every year and wanted to try something different? Defensively, the squad does seem to have strengthened considerably since the January transfer window with Luka PVA etc coming in? Also the average age of the squad does need to come down given the nuimber of players in their late 20's and 30's. So I think FdB with Parish's backing is moving in the right direction. If 'rumours' are anything to go by, we are looking at further strengthening the defence through players like Chambers (although the rumour mill is remarkably inactive at the moment.) I am assuming there will be a flurry of additional transfer activity between now and the start of the season. IF a couple of additional good defensive players do come in, then personally I think we are in a reasonably solid position to do OK (ie above the bottom 5)

You are quite right that Parish does think that the changes will improve our tally at home, albeit I'm thinking that he may have had in mind a more gradual transiton:

Of concern is that two of the times we've got ourselves into difficulties both stem from that style of play; Holloway and Pardew (in 2016), and sadly Warnock was just past it. We've got out of it every time by doing what we do best, under Pulis, Pardew (in 2015) and Allardyce, which is playing on the counter. Hopefully we will adapt our style home and away and whether or not the opposition is ceding possession to us and not stick stubbornly to one system (which was Pardew's downfall).

Looking at our first 10 (minus the goalie -Henessey is a bad joke) you would say we should be on for mid table finish. The problem is that we do not have any depth in the squad and should be looking to improve the starting XI.

I seem to remember Pardew saying something ridiculous last season about wanting to play attractive football with no-one pointing out then, or now, we do not have players capable of doing that or fitted to that style.

I cannot realistically see any 'flourish of transfer activity' between now and the start of the season and 4 signings is a ludicrous suggestion. I am however trying to stay optimistic and think we will be at least better than last year's dreadful start however should we lose to Huddersfield I can see a sickening feeling of deja vu coming over me.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Good points regarding the squad and direction. The point highlighted might of been said this time last year and we all know what happened. Hopefully FdB isn't yet preening around Selhurst. Also lot of talk about getting the defence right but at the top at the mo we are one injury away from being right in it.

Time will tell, if the club rate him as high as you do why didn't they offer him a new deal . He gives 100% but neither an excellent defensive mid or a great attacking mid.

We don't know if he;s been offered a deal or not.

He was our highest scoring midfield player at the point he was injured, third highest scorer for the season, made loads of tackles, blocks and clearances.

His stats are in and around the same as Cabaye's, but with slightly fewer games/minutes (3 games /125min diff.). McArthur has one more goal, equal on assists, McArthur has one more block, Cabaye edges it on pass completion rate (by 81% to 78%), but McArthur edges clearances (27 to 23). Cabaye wins hands down on Key Passes but, also made 2 errors leading to goals, whereas McArthur made zero. As for tackles, McArthur wins there over Cabaye too having won more and lost less.

Essentially if "but neither an excellent defensive mid or a great attacking mid" applies to McArthur, it also applies to Cabaye.

We have two CM places, we need four players of the Cabaye/McArthur quality or above. We have that at Milivojevic, Puncheon, McArthur and Cabaye. Unless we're bringing in someone better or we've had an offer and they want to go, we should keep and extend contracts where necessary.

maybe we just do not have enough cash for a back up benteke and a RWB. maybe we are on the verge of spending millions on those two positions and the only player being bid for is McArthur and for a good sum too, if those conditions are being currently met then I cant blame the club for contemplating selling McArthur. Who knows, FdB also may know of a good quality CM from abroad we may get for pittance to make this potential void dealable.

He may just be a sale we have to do

Possibly, and good post by Indefatigable as well.

Yeah fair enough, there are a number of conditions or situations that selling McArthur would be the right thing to do, but it would also apply to Cabaye if the offer was for him.

In a slightly unrelated point, if Punch contributed goals, purely based on stats, he and Milivojevic would be far and away our best CM combo (assuming Milivojevic were to average out the whole season). It's actually quite alarming, the only thing missing to Punch is his lack of goals. Lets hope he score early this season, get loads of confidence and uses it as a spring board for the season.

We actually have 5 - Luka, puncheon, loftus-cheek, mcarthur and cabaye and with puncheon all but guaranteed a start. If we need funds for a wingback or a goalie. Then we may have to sell one of mcarthur or Cabaye.

I completely forgot about RLC. I guess we could afford to lose one of them then. Personally I'd rather lose Cabaye. McArthur, when fit, is slightly more versatile, slightly younger, would probably strengthen a team in direct competition with us if sold.

Cabaye just hasn't performed as expected, is probably on higher wages and would possibly get a higher transfer fee, just.

Edit - l paragraph above is part of the quote, note sure why this hasn't worked

I agree with your logic however I'd definitely sell McArthur over Cabaye. McArthur is decent and certainly nothing against him, but Cabaye is a better player IMO. However it goes to show how much the squad has improved that this is even being discussed.

I'm not as fussed about replacing Hennessy as some/most - he has his faults but he also has some good games he doesn't get much credit. In an ideal world we'd replace him as well but we need a new striker, CB and RWB first.

He's missing a bit of speed too... Quicker decision making. He slows the game down alot. Which dB might light. But that slowness I think also directly relates to his goals problem last season.

All either down to confidence or sadly he's lost some of his game early. That can happen
