Er....that's the bit I didn't really want to give away in my first post.

If it's any consolation PTJ, Mrs YT came out of the cinema completely oblivious to the fact that she'd seen the same events a number of times over. I did kinda wonder which direction she'd been looking for an hour and three quarters. She's actually very intelligent (she married me, for example) but she does sometimes have problems with 'non-linear' stuff. Like, she would really enjoy Doctor Who if it wasn't for all those confusing time-travelling scenes!!

I don't think that's a spoiler, not in the slightest. It happens with insignificant things before it happens with significant stuff.

The RAF fighter squadrons were shattered by the retreat from France.
As portrayed in the movie, a 1940 fighter had precious little flying time (and therefore minimal fighting time) over the beaches before it would have to turn for home. It simply wasn't feasible to fly across then fly around waiting for a Junkers to appear,
Perhaps less well portrayed is the pitiful amount of ammunition a fighter plane had. I haven't double-checked before posting but I seem to recall reading that a Spitfire in the Battle of Britain would only be able to fire at the enemy for about 30 seconds. Fighter planes were therefore OK as short-range interceptors (finest hour and all that) but not very useful in longer-range 'search and destroy' operations.

Edited to acknowledge that JamieM got this point in first!

You're right that Spitfires and Hurricanes had only about 30 seconds of ammunition. Also, they were fitted with (relatively) small calibre machine guns, whereas the Messerschmidts had cannons with about 90 seconds of ammunition. The mismatch - on paper - was unsurvivable.

We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football.

I have been rescued !!!!!!!!!

It has been pointed out to me (as though I am an idiot how absurd) that there is a reason for the RAF and luftwaffe seemingly being absent.

In fact there was a pitch battle going on inland with the RAF attacking airfields and the luftwaffe in the air and that this was to prevent them finishing off our men at Dunkirk.

Sounds much more feasible to me and apparently from the records of the men who flew at the time must have been many personnel lost.

And seemingly the men on the beach did resent the RAF not being there but had no idea why. Bad feeling that was restored by the forthcoming battle of Britain?

France well within range of our aircraft - closer than Birmingham.

I saw it last week & thought it was effective. As someone else said on here, it was loud!
My father was brought out of Dunkirk in a hospital ship-his heavy-gun crew having been blown up. He survived into his 90s with shrapnel in his leg which weirdly started moving a few years before his death.
He was 19 when he went there. A London lad, he'd only travelled as far as the coast before the war, but ended up in the desert, the Far East, Monte Casino & elsewhere.
Like many, he scarcely spoke about it.
As a teacher, I've taken early semi-retirement, but do share stories of the heroism of some in the wars. Children always seem respectful & interested in my experience if it's presented interestingly.

Just another annoying feminist in today's seemingly endless line of them.

She attacks the film for appealing to males. Incredibly sexist if you apply feminism's rules for men equally towards women as well....But I don't....Still, I don't mind pointing out the hypocrisy.

But what does she care.....she's just another journalist looking for attention.

Stupid fcuking bint. The three females who accompanied YT (Mrs and Misses YT) had no such prejudice and thought the movie was excellent. And my daughters are pretty PC. I suspect this bint had written her 'piece' before she'd even seen it. Who reads this sh*t anyway, as opposed to watching something and making your own mind up?

I saw it a week ago. I really enjoyed it. I'm not a history buff so I'm sure there could've been historical inaccuracies but if a film is good then I couldn't really care less. I enjoyed Harry Potter but I have my doubts he could really do magic.

That's because you are a Muggle.

Loved the film Mark Rylance was superb.

On a historical note The RAF inflicted more losses on the Luftwaffe than they received. The RAF played an an important part in the evacuation of Dunkirk. The Luftwaffle were virtually non-existent in the last three days of the evacuation

I have prepared one of my own time capsules. I have placed some rather large samples of dynamite, gunpowder and nitroglycerin. My time capsule is set to go off in the year 3000. It will show them what we are really like.
