People tend to think genetic engineering would be expensive - but its the opposite if your the NHS. Genetic engineering something is a one off cost, which compared to life long treatment for a disease or disorder is going to always be a lot cheaper in terms of the impact on resources. Take diabeties - Someone on a insulin for life, requires prescriptions every month. They also require medical monitoring, and over their lifespan they'll need special treatment in relation to pregnancy, medical treatment for side effects from the disease etc. If you can cure that with a single one shot cure genetically - over the course of the patients life time it represents a massive saving. Even if the treatment initially is very expensive. Its notable that most of the media about a capitalist dystopia in relation to genetic engineering or science comes from within the US - where health is a financial commodity. Once you start down the technology of genetic engineering - its going to be a lot cheaper than people who need regular medical treatment across their whole life.

Edited by Stirlingsays (03 Aug 2017 12.39pm) Blade runner is a dystopia, but not because of the technology or the science, but because of the people - which is kind of evident in the novel its based on. The dysfunction of humanity is actually solved by the replicants. The earth is f**ked because of wars - everyone who can moves off world, which is why replicants keep fleeing to earth, because hardly anyone lives there (and in fact it might well be a case that only there are more replicants on earth, than humans, or the population might entirely consist of replicants and replicants who don't know they're replicants). Certainly in the novel many of the characters mentioned or featured are could well be replicants. In fact, Androids 'don't dream of electric sheep' at all... They have a more meaningful and spiritual existence as a result of technology than humans do - Except of course humans who don't realise they're replicants - indeed many of them know the purpose and meaning of existence...

Even if he's laundering his proceeds through the noodle shack, I'm guessing that they eye business is pretty cheap (cause if you can launder your funds through a noodle shack, as a one man operation, you're probably not making a huge amount of money - and if the noodle shack is legit or the eyes are legit, then neither business is exactly massively profitable.... So they're probably affordable (after all the stripper can afford a genetically engineered python, and she's been on earth a few weeks).
