“It’s odd that the mainstream press blames ‘socialism’ for the food problems in Venezuela, when the food distributors remain in the hands of private corporations,” who are “running general sabotage” of the system.

That sabotage by the private sector has taken the form of hoarding of selected items, price speculation, keeping supermarket shelves empty, sending food shipments to neighbouring countries, even setting food warehouse stockpiles on fire. This purposely-generated scarcity creates chaos and discontent, further undermining the government.

Maria Paez Victor notes that “The opposition orchestrated economic sabotage, corporate smuggling, black market currency manipulations, full scale hoarding of food and essential products. They closed highways, burned public buildings including a packed maternity hospital, from a helicopter dropped grenades on to the Supreme Court offices, have assaulted, lynched and even burned alive [at least 21] young men of dark skin ‘who looked Chavista’. This is a violent opposition steeped in racism and classism against their own people and in the service of foreign powers and Big Oil.”

Why doesn't the socialist government shoot them then - after all, they are shooting everyone else.
By the way the IMF reports that the economy shrank last year by 8%, inflation hit 481%, unemployment was 17% and malnutrition is now widespread.

Goldman Sachs Accused of “Aiding and Abetting” Venezuela’s “Dictatorial Regime”.......

"Goldman Sachs' financial lifeline to the regime will serve to strengthen the brutal repression unleashed against the hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans peacefully protesting for political change in the country," wrote Julio Borges in a letter to Goldman Sachs President Lloyd Blankfein.

"Given the unconstitutional nature of Nicolas Maduro's administration, its unwillingness to hold democratic elections and its systematic violation of human rights, I am dismayed that Goldman Sachs decided to enter this transaction."

The letter adds that Congress will open an investigation into the transaction and that he will recommend "to any future democratic government of Venezuela not to recognize or pay these bonds."

A Goldman Sachs spokesman said the bank declined to comment........

What?

So, if you think socialism is a failed system that means you are meant to defend the practices of Goldman Sachs?

Full blown Socialism doesn't work...that's independent of Venezuela.........and Goldman Sachs are arseholees....both are true.

There have always been pros and cons to capitalism and socialism.

Here we have a mixed political system. We have a regulated but mostly free market but we also have aspects of socialism with our mostly free health service and education for those who can get to A level.

Both capitalism and socialism have inherent problems.

Capitalism promotes entrepreneurship but it also ends up with large wealth inequalities and power disproportionately in the hands of a powerful few.

Socialism, looks to provide for everybody but becomes a large centralized authoritarian system which controls industry and regulates the lives of its citizens. Individuals become limited in what they can achieve and told how to behave and think.

This thread exposures and criticises those who promoted Venezuela as a good example of socialism and ignored its terrible realities because of its few successes.

Venezuela was never a good example of anything. And it is valid to criticise the judgement of people who presented it as such.
