How's that?

You state that all progressives claim that men and women are the same, and then make fun of the ridiculous premise. Of course, the premise is not true, hence "straw man". [Link]

How would you describe the Google attitude toward male and female roles then?
There seems to be a clear message that anything men can do women can do or else when surely a more sensible attitude would be to recognise the strengths and weaknesses of each sex and of each individual. Treating both sexes like some kind of human resource monoculture is as bad as sexual stereotyping in my opinion.

I weigh 260 pounds of mostly muscle. If I needed carrying or dragging to safety I'd expect a women fighting on the front line to be physically able to do it.

Otherwise....if that isn't the case....then what has happened has nothing to do with equality.

Would you be happy with a sixty year old firefighter carrying you out of a building?

No, sorry, that isn't on in my view.

Please tell me the non progressive silicon valley company that this guy could be employed at? When the market you have skills in it pretty much political at one end I'm afraid that's not much of a choice.

Maybe you should read the memo as it was backed up by statistics from what I've read. Please, I'm eager to know what you consider 'dodgy pseudo science' from it? I'm eager to know that.

The person who wrote it considers themselves a classic liberal and the memo reads very mild to me. He even recommends actual approaches which he feels would more effectively increase female participation in the profession.

If this was an attack, it's a very mild one....The response has been aggressive.....It seems to me that even speaking reality gets you fired. I suspect the person knew the risk they were taking....hence the anonymity....But that didn't save him it appears.

Google are a disgrace.

This is one of those pernicious disguised attacks on equality. Nobody knows the true differences between men and women. There is an argument that women make better software engineers not worse as they are often better at social networking and teamwork. Only very junior engineers work alone.

Google IS neither a plural nor - on this occasion at least - a disgrace. Essay on the subjection of women was written in 1869 yet still people haven't grasped it's message.

What utter utter nonsense.

I have zero problems with individuals working at professions they choose if they qualify. Did you actually read that memo?

How many sixty year old firefighters are going into burning buildings?

Also sixty year old men are a lot stronger than most women.

What nonsense are you going on about Nick?

Yes, it is rubbish and was debunked in 1869. It was also a deeply inappropriate attack on the organisation for which James Damore worked and did it serious damage.

For the reasons John Stuart Mill described it is inaccurate. The Americans have a history of reductionist thinking in these areas. They love to believe in genetic and chemical reasons for actions.

What Damore did is to state his female colleagues are mostly less good at their jobs than the males. Not directly but implicitly. Many people will swallow that cr@p.

No, Damore said you need to treat people as individuals.

So diversity is great but diversity of opinion isn't? This was an internal memo, not a press release.

You never answered my questions to you in my previous post....Again, what did this guy write that isn't backed up by scientific work? It's already been supported.

That's far more current than Mill, writing nearly a 150 years ago. Where were the studies that back up his view?

The memo's contentions have already had scientific backing. Here are quotes from scientists in this field.

Four scientists writing for Quillette magazine said the memo was scientifically accurate.

“The author of the Google essay on issues related to diversity gets nearly all of the science and its implications exactly right,” wrote Lee Jussim, a professor of social psychology at Rutgers University.

“For what it’s worth, I think that almost all of the Google memo’s empirical claims are scientifically accurate,” wrote Geoffrey Miller, an evolutionary psychology professor at the University of New Mexico.

Professor David P. Schmitt, the former Chair of the Psychology Department at Bradley University, and Dr. Debra W. Soh, a Toronto-based writer who received her PhD in sexual neuroscience from the University of York, offered similar sentiments.

Why does Mill, writing nearly 150 years ago supersede modern research?

The memo yes, not Mill.

He was writing long before scientific research yet you place him in front of it?

I've answered your question why haven't you answered mine?
