It's very simple . You play the system that suites your players until you are established enough to attract and afford players that can play a different system, and then maybe become Barca or suchlike.

Unfortunately the managers that understood this only stayed with us for half a season.

You cannot just announce a new system and expect the players to be able to play it.

And expect the keeper to suddenly change from being useless with the ball stuck between his feet to talented with the ball. And expect the players to keep giving it to him. Maybe a new keeper will solve this but I'd rather see all this after the players are in rather than before.

We were passing back to the Goalkeeper when under very little or no pressure, yet decided top hoof it up field when the defender was under pressure.

As a lifelong fan I want to see us progress in our 5th year in the premier league. I think the OP made some good points and think that people misunderstand richest league for best league.
I want to see us make progress in playing, ground, academy, coaches, training ground. But this has to be done over time. The team and squad have been built now for years around counter attacking aggressive speedy wingers type of football.we simply don't have the players who are comfortable with the ball at their feet to play 343. We have a different more traditional breed. It can work and we can change but we really need to spend to do it. Am really surprised in Parish going for this after the disaster Pardew made out of it with pretty much the same players. I want to see us dominate possession and pass the ball around and be more entertained but I want us to be in the premier league more and with gentle slow progression. We may have gone to quick to change too much too soon.

To be honest, I agree with pretty much everything Mstrobez said, bar the Huddersfield system, because their system is parking the bus and hassling, and always has been.

However, for me, it was very basic things we got very wrong... the passing, the crossing, the work ethic was all lacking today, and that is what worries me the most. You can tell when players are adapting, but for me it was the fundamentals which seemed to be very off today. Whether that's due to Huddersfield's game plan, I don't know.

At the end of the day, it's very difficult to say after just 1 game. I am in favour of trying the formation again, and if that means we gotta come back come November, that's fine, because we're Palace. I will always be there and cheer them on. Up the Palace.

TBH I don't know what you are talking about now , I said if it was working we would not be groaning , I said we passed it three times before hoofing it (doesn't matter who) and know you confess to being the joining in with the groaning you were moaning about .

I meant we as in Palace fans. I didn't groan, I wanna at least give it a chance and I found the atmosphere around Selhurst today just ridiculous, prior to going 3 down.

It's almost as if the writing is on the wall already for Frank and perhaps Steve should've factored in the style of play palace fans actually want to see. As for many it's quite clear it's not this.

Frank was actually my third choice, Silva and Pellegrino were above him in my list but I just cannot for the life of me work out what outcome will come from this negativity other than tears.

We all went into this game with a lot of trepidation as we knew the system was going to be completely different. The groans from our fans so early on is a real wind up for me also and it was music to the oppositions ears. I am surprised us as fans don't realise the tension we bring to our home games in general. I think SP has gambled a bit hoping we can be better over the season than 3 other teams and progress with this system. I have concerns as we saw a simple press on us early on and we looked ragged, what will Liverpool do to us. We say we have the best league in the world and I agree with that but only for exciting attaching football where anyone can beat anyone no one or two horse races here.

A lot of the groans were happening not just because it was something new but because we were 2-0 down at home after 26 mins. And it was to the team favourites to finish bottom.

It was not just because of a bad pass or whatever. A lot of us knew we weren't ready for this 3-4-3 without the players and that is what transpired.

As soon as the team's were announced the palace win drifted 10% or 15% and the draw shortened. I said that would happen.

I agree with everything the OP has said. I don't agree with another poster who said that no effort was shown, I put what looked like lack of effort down to players who aren't comfortable in a possession based system not showing for the ball and instead shying away from it i.e Ward, Puncheon. Watch Punch for Danns mistake, he should be asking for the ball, instead he's hiding behind an opposition player and telling Dann to play backwards, this sort of mentality needs to be changed. We need CMs and Wing Backs who want the ball in tight areas. RLC showed how the system can work if confident enough in your own ability.

Next game needs, RLC in the centre alongside Mili with a RWB as a priority in the transfer window.

For me, De Boer does not yet understand Crystal Palace and is trying to change too much too quickly, without having the players to do it, or possibly the coaching acumen.

The same thing happened to Pardew.

Pulis is a massively underrated manager and certainly here because of the acrimonious nature of his departure. That aside, at every club he's been at, he's looked at the players he has and plays to the individual and collective strength, then gradually imposes where he wants to go with new signings. It's not rocket science but is surprisingly rare.

Allardyce had a simple approach that can be implemented at pretty much any prem club. That's why he's never been relegated.

De Boer needs to learn in double-quick time what he's got (a very good squad) and how to get the best out of them and get results. Over time he can refine while hopefully still getting enough results, but not straight away.

I can only presume he hasn't done his homework on Palace, either last season or since we've been in the prem, which is such a shocking thought I hope I'm wrong. He doesn't seem to know that Townsend is one of our best players, Ward is a good player but never a wing back and we are not comfortable in possession in front of our own box - although few are in this time of chasing players down.

I hope he rectifies quickly, it's ok to make mistakes, especially at the beginning, but to not adapt would be unforgiveable.

You'll be forever in my family's memories and it was an honor and privilege to play and lead in the red and blue
Yours sincerely
Mile Jedinak

Bloody hell relax people it's only one game.

My thoughts exactly. Some of the over reacting on here has been comical. Yes it was embarrassing and not nice to watch at all but it was the first game!!

We are playing a new system. It will take time... In Frank we trust.

Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!!
