He invented the concept of a pop star.

Before him you had crooners like Sinatra and then some great Black rock and rollers like Little Richard and Chuck Berry but Elvis took it to a new level in terms of popularity. He inspired a whole generation of singers and musicians.

I actually quite like some of his stuff.

I've also got to admit, I've caught myself singing along to a couple of the songs in the Elvis w@nkfest currently playing on the radio.

A good tune is a good tune, regardless of when it was recorded.
When you get older like me you don't see music in terms of new or old. It is either good or not, depending on your taste.

Elvis to me just meant sh1t films everyday during the school holidays and big sideburns.

He didn't even write his own songs, did he? If he wasn't such a good looking b'stard I don't think we would have heard of him. Could sing though and swivel.

Watching TV all day as a kid, explains a lot.

He was the performer, not a writer, there is no doubt he changed the face of music forever.

Think people find him a bit cheesy because of all the naff tribute acts . I personally like viva las vegas. Great song when you've had a few drinks.

And no Elvis without Johnnie Cash and Sister Rosa Tharpe.

Can't argue that Elvis was hugely popular though.

Was never a fan, although, strangely, a 7in of Jailhouse Rock was one of my prized possessions when I was a kid, until my brother stole it off me. I liked that song..

I can see Elvis's importance in the annals of rock n' roll in its infancy in the 1950s, but personally I've never really warmed to his music that much, particularly anything after the start of the 1960s. I always found his vocal delivery a bit "mannered".

Given the choice I'd always prefer to listen to a bit of Chuck Berry or Jerry Lee Lewis.

And, am I the only one who wants to give a good whipping to anyone who still dresses up/impersonates Elvis in white suit, wing collar, mutton-chop sideburn 1970s mode??

Don't be so hard on yourself. People have to get their sexual kicks anyway they can.

Glad it's not just me that doesn't get all the hype around Elvis, awful boring music. Maybe if I was born in the Elvis era I'd feel differently.

Although I'd say the same about the Beatles as well

Exactly that is why you do not realise the pleasure he gave to many people unlike the cr@p singers of today.
He was the King of Pop and always will be.

Supported Palace for over 69 years since the age of 7 and have seen all the ups and downs and will probably see many more ups and downs before I go up to the big football club in the sky.

Looks like I'm in the minority here but I absolutely love Elvis. Forget the naff films, his attributes as an entertainer were second to none and he could actually sing far better than people give him credit for. If you listen to a piano version of unchained melody that he did you will see what an amazing range he had to his voice.

Favourite songs.... American Trilogy and I just can't help believing.

Ok little Bear Grylls #2 enlighten us with what you did everyday that was so interesting and magnificent before noon in the school hols when you were 13? What was it? Voluntary work? Early morning daily marathon swimming sessions? Something admirable no doubt.
