Just off the top of my head: Evans, Young, Gilbert, Thorn, Warhurst, to name but five. (I could go on). All these CBs were plainly better than Sakho.

And before anyone says 'But Warhurst played up front', he was one of those all-too-rare CBs who could also play central striker (like Dion Dublin) and who could alternate (and did) between the two positions. It was a great shame that injury blighted his career, as it also did to Evans.

Didn't see some if those players in their prime. But the there is no way that Young, Warhurst or Thorn could even lace Sakho's boots. Think about what you're posting before posting it. The game has evolved to such a high standard that none of them would even be able to get a game. Sakho came in and made keeping us up against the best strikers in the world look like a walk in the park. Far and away the best centre half ever to pull on a Palace top.

Rather than all this verbal masturbating if we can get back to the subject in hand, according to the Express FdB has claimed that he is definitely interested in Sakho but not at that price.

I still think that this deal is on as Klopp can't have the final say on financial matters surely

My guess would be that, once he didn't put Sakho in the squad, Klopp has no say whatsoever and that any deal will be a matter for the Liverpool board.

there is a real chance we can't afford Sakho or maybe we just want Liverpool to think we are not bothered.

If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities.

If the latter how come we haven't signed an alternative as even Liverpool can see that we have stood aside whilst all the other proven central defenders have been snapped up by others.

According to the media other clubs have allegedly been interested in Sakho but not at that price which surely must tell them something

What does he want style over results, or is Sakho too big a name.

I think it is more the fact we don't want to spend the money. Sakho fits the bill perfectly. He can play football better than any of our current CBs. Absolute compusure on the ball

I think signing Sakho is dependent on selling Cabaye who is on high wages, still coveted by other teams and thirtyone with only a year remaining on his contract.

Guess RL-C plugging that gap and loss of high wage would help with FFP aspect.

Many players at the top level find their form falls off a cliff in their late twenties / early thirties. Puncheon's decline over the last year ?

We also have Dann who's turned thirty and MacArthur about to. If one or two aren't moved on then we'll have a problem IMO.

What is the strategic point ?
As I implied there is no strategy in signing players just to sell on if we get relegated, because we should have been signing players to stop us getting relegated.

You imagine we never ever sell a player. That would be poor management of the club. Small clubs have to sell to stay punching a bit above their weight. Or you can do what QPR do.

If you don't sell you only have the tv money and no other edge whilst others around you will eventually see you disappear because the good times have run out.

The growth of Spurs has been fuelled by buying cheap and nurturing. They now have a team worth a fortune that will give them the muscle to stay there. Similar happened with Wenger in his early years.

Parish might be concerned this sort of thing might catch up with us. Cabaye has one year left, Sakho at £20-£30 mil with no resale value. Only Benteke as a forward, probably because he cost so much (a case of the Sunderlands there).

Sounds like he rates Sakho highly but the price is the sticking point.......negotiations resuming soon apparently.

It's a necessary evil for us unfortunately. I'm concerned about selling Cabaye more than any of the others. You notice him more when unavailable and that tells you enough. Jimmy might sign a new deal so it's either sell or extend if there's no buyer. Dann is dependent on how many defenders needed. If we didn't play 3 we wouldn't need him as much.

But how transfer fees have risen sharply of late !

Looking at the current Tottenham squad, I believe that Tripper,Dier,Rose,Alli and Vertonghen cost around £21 Mill in total !
But they have just purchased defender Sanchez from Ajax for £42 Mill.

It's like nobody on here has ever negotiated.

If you are interested in buying something, and it's a negotiation, of course you don't say how interested you are. You tell the seller you have other options, you aren't really that keen etc. etc. And if you can get a third party with a big mouth to do that for you even better.

It may be we don't want Sakho, it may be we are trying to save a few million and have always intended buying Sakho. We shall know in 11 days or so.

There is a real chance we can't afford not to sign Sakho - we know what he can do and we were a different proposition when he was in the team.
