She got £11,000 of taxpayer-funded compensation for her lies. Which can't be recovered.

I've never understood why being the victim of crime should mean you simply get given money. It's a ridiculous system even if you have been an actual victim, it's not like it takes the crime away.

Probably because things like therapy, loss of work etc all costs.

Personally, I believe that compensation should be provided and paid for by the convicted party (or at least to a reasonable level) - and if they can't then its levied against their future earnings and earnings based on work in prison should go towards this. Even if that prison work is digging holes and then filling them back in for minimum wage.

The state compensation is pretty low, but I guess its down to the failure of the state to protect its citizens, it must at least provide some kind of compensation towards their recovery or experience.

You should have to request it if that is the case. At present it is arbitrarily handed out whether or not you need therapy, time off work etc. or were indeed actually a victim of the crime you purport to be.

I'd also advocate the guilty party pays as close to 100% of the compensation as is possible, either by taking money they already have or by them having to repay it out of prison earnings or any cash gifts they receive. But only in cases where monetary compensation is actually required and not just because, well, free money is handy isn't it.

The state shouldn't simply hand out money because somebody has been, or claimed to be, a victim of crime. Whether you think it is low or not. £10K multiplied by a few hundred, or thousand, victims soon adds up to a lot of money.

Therapy? Another growth industry. A friend of mine was assaulted a few years back and they sent round a 'Grief councillor' when asked if he wanted to talk about his experience? He said no I want you to catch the perpetrator. Every national disaster seems to be met with a chorus of 'Grief councillors will be on standby to assist victims'
