Yes I have heard this view expressed.
But because it's the NHC and culturally sensitive we all have to deem that it is a wonderful event.
And it would be but for the heinous criminality year on year.

At the end of the day, the NHC and other similar events, like Reading where a teenager lost his life, are virtually a 'Free pass' for drug dealers and criminals.

Bread and circuses.

I don't think Reading Festival can be compared to this. There is drug taking and heavy drinking which leads to misadventure but this is different to attacking the police and carrying lethal weapons.

There was also at least one stabbing at Reading Festival this year, along with a number of incidents of violence.

When I was at the Pheonix festival in 1992, there was a full scale riot, including fighting among the campers and the riot police and security, and it barely got news coverage.

Probably the big difference is that reporters are much more likely to be in and cover Notting Hill thoroughly than a three day festival.

That said, Notting Hill festival has a reputation.

Fair enough, large gatherings of young people usually result in anti social behaviour and a bit of conflict. However, I seriously doubt that 1000 people would be arrested at any other UK event. Whataboutery doesn't alter that shameful statistic.

Hrolf

It is a shameful statistic and the criminalty is totally disgraceful but can you ever see it being banned in future ?

Can you imagine the furore, vitriol and vituperation if such steps were taken !

I went this year and it was amazing. The hospitality is incredible, and the police deserve credit for their approach. Considering the heat, flowing alcohol and drugs, and the fact there were thousands and thousands of people present the vibe was entirely positive. I think I saw 1 solitary instance of someone being spoken to by police, and that was pretty low key.

Possibly the most culturally unifying experience I have ever witnessed.

The cost of the event must be ridiculously high, but the benefit to our society is justified. It's all too rare these days that we are reminded that people are inherently decent.

Even though you went there will be a bus along in a minute, full of frothy-mouthed reactionaries that didn't go, to undermine your post shortly.

NOT "Funny" at all if you were the victim of the violence.

Of course I get the bit about the carnival atmosphere, the outpouring of goodwill and joy portrayed by the left-wing press but one shouldn't gloss over the disgraceful criminality which year on tear pervades this event.

Hundreds of arrests, 31 police officers injured by bottles etc, acid attacks, knives, hammers etc seized. This is not some "Froth-filled" frenzy by a right-wing Tory this is the reality sadly.

I have said enough on this, will now concentrate on all the transfer activity !!!!

I would just like to add that Brixton and Notting Hill prove that cultures, multis of them, can live side by side cheek by jowl, the majority of peeps anyway, once the anti-s have vented and then let everyone get on with it, as it has been 65 years now since Windrush.

How many race riots have they had in those areas not specifically directed at the police/social inequality but different ethnic cultures at each others throats since 1960-ish? 0 - that's how many.

Someone fired a crossbow at the Oval today. Let's ban cricket.
