This post has been merged from a topic called 'Motson’s Final Match' by Penge Eagle It’ll be John Motson’s final match commentating on Sunday when we play West Brom. Know the guy has no direct link to palace but thought it might be nice for us to do something to mark his awesome career of commentating? Whether it be there’s only one John motson or something like that at a certain minute of the game. Thoughts?

Love him or hate him...he has been the voice everyone knows. Hope the club make some sort of presentation to him.

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Motson’s Final Match' by Penge Eagle I would hope the club will do something also, several grounds, including Brighton, presented him with a shirt of the team in recognition of his footballing work, hope SP sorts something out for him before the game in front of the crowd on the pitch would be good.

This must be apocryphal but it made me laugh. In the sixties Celtic were playing some Russian side and the commentator didn't recognise one of the players. Someone else came into the room and he asked, "Who's the number nine?" And the newcomer replied: "F***ed if I know". From then on it was "And there's the through ball to Faktifaino. Now if he can just find Faktifaino... Faktifaino trying to meet the cross", and so on. Then again I remember the good old Serie A line "And he's coming out and looking for Totti". Kind of a Simon Groome "What a wonderful pair of knockers" moment. Can't remember who was responsible. Edited by chateauferret (08 May 2018 9.35am)

Think he became a commentator after winning a competition. My favourite was always Brian Moore from the big match. Been some great ones down the years. Ken wolstenholme, one nil Coleman, Gerald sinstadt and others. Motto wasn't my favourite but he had a great career. Keneth Wolstenholme was GREAT, if you were a Man united fan, so biased towards them it was embarrassing.

Indeed he is but his wife and her family are Palace supporters so perhaps he also has an allegiance towards our club. I recall some of his commentaries from yesteryear when, following a Palace goal he sometimes used to say "They will be celebrating in the XXX and the XXX" with XXX being the names of local pubs ! I'm not a fan of Motson as a commentator, I find him a bit cliche, which I suppose is inevitable as he's been around so long and has done a lot to 'define' the image of a commentator. Also I'm not a fan of commentators who gibber pointless stats instead of offering any kind of proper introduction, which he is prone to. However, when he's a guest on football shows, he's brilliant. When he loses the 'neutrality' of being a commentator and expresses his own opinions he's a really insightful chap and incredibly knowledgable. I suspect he'll pop up for the occasional cameo here and there.

I agree he is insightful and incredibly knowledgable about the game and I have always enjoyed the plethora of stats - I do like my stats ! I have met Motson at a corporate event and he was absolutely charming and good company.

Jonathan Pearce may be a Bristol City fan, but my god his commentary on Capital Gold sport was superb. I still have the final day summary from the year we survived at Stockport.
