Think he became a commentator after winning a competition. My favourite was always Brian Moore from the big match. Been some great ones down the years. Ken wolstenholme, one nil Coleman, Gerald sinstadt and others. Motto wasn't my favourite but he had a great career.

Thank god for that he is a boring, over rated, up his own backside know it all and will not be missed. Plus he does not like Palace .. so up his!!!

Supported Palace for over 69 years since the age of 7 and have seen all the ups and downs and will probably see many more ups and downs before I go up to the big football club in the sky.

Good 50 years to late as far as I' m concerned, use to put me right off watching footie with his irritating match commentary oh and let's not forget that bloody irritating match, player place, dribble that he use to come out with , I really think he made it up as he went along

Brian Moore was popular at Selhurst. I remember us chanting his name on the terrace under his precarious looking commentary position in the Homesdale.

Dave, I think that may have been Ian St John. Motson I believe was already 'BBC' when he was recognised as a potential commentator.

The four you've listed, I agree were great.

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

I recall an 'Idwal Robling' who became a commentator after winning a competition.

Blimey!

I don't know if anyone has mentioned (for me) the daddy of them all...Peter Jones. On the radio, of course.

As an aside, quite an early radio memory I have is of Des Lynham (have I spelt that right?) commentating on boxing. Competently so, as I recall.
