Think he became a commentator after winning a competition. My favourite was always Brian Moore from the big match. Been some great ones down the years. Ken wolstenholme, one nil Coleman, Gerald sinstadt and others. Motto wasn't my favourite but he had a great career.

Supported Palace for over 69 years since the age of 7 and have seen all the ups and downs and will probably see many more ups and downs before I go up to the big football club in the sky. |

Met him last year.Spent a couple of hours in his company at a match.He was on a busman's holiday.Really nice bloke and didn't come over as being negative towards Palace in any way.

Good 50 years to late as far as I' m concerned, use to put me right off watching footie with his irritating match commentary oh and let's not forget that bloody irritating match, player place, dribble that he use to come out with , I really think he made it up as he went along

Motson I believe was already 'BBC' when he was recognised as a potential commentator. The four you've listed, I agree were great.

As an aside, quite an early radio memory I have is of Des Lynham (have I spelt that right?) commentating on boxing. Competently so, as I recall.
