I don't think even the most misguided person would say they were eating bacon because they couldn't derive protein from another source! People eat bacon because it's a nice treat. It's like Mars Bars or Beer. No one consumes them for the health benefits or nutrition!

It's a fallacy that you need to eat meat to get protein. Where do you think the cow gets its protein from? Vegetables - especially anything that's dark in colour - are an excellent source of protein. And, again, because they aren't heavy with fat, sodium or cholesterol, you can eat a lot more veggies and so fulfill all your protein and all other nutrient needs without killing yourself in the process.

Slice of bacon is so American. Their bacon is streaky and fatty, our's is mostly back bacon but to say there's 1.1g of saturated fat per slice is so generic it's wrong. There are so many types of bacon and ways to cook it or cure it.

But back on topic, I love avocado and always have. From the 80s style prawn cocktail in half an avocado, to the chicken, bacon and avocado ciabatta. Guacamole is great unless some b****** ruins it with chopped tomato.

Its a bit hipster, but I'm partial to guacamole as a dip, and as a treat, avocado in a bacon sandwich.

On its own, not a fan, but it seems to bring out the flavours in other things very nicely.

Never tried it on toast for breakfast mind.

Bacon could be as bad a cigs, and booze, I'd still eat it. Thing is, you have to die of something, might as well be for a good reason. Love, freedom, bacon.

I do find that chemical alteration, have been a massive health benefit, for other people. Without mood alteration I'm pretty certain I'd have murdered some f**kers by now.

I could live without chocolate but a life of sobriety is like being condemned to a f**king waking nightmare of banality.

Agreed - too much protein will be turned to fat if you don't use it. The concept of being able to eat your face off as a vegetarian is because it takes more volume of food to over-eat on things like protein, so you are far more likely to feel full before you have overdone it. In fact, one of the problems with the modern diet of processed foods - especially processed meats - is that they pack such a concentrated punch (not it a good way) in small volumes that you have to eat far too much in order to satiate your hunger multiplying the negative health effects.

Animal proteins also have other negative effects in addition to being a package deal with fat, sodium and cholesterol. They create an acidity that your body neutralises with calcium so that dairy products - while rich in calcium - are also rich in animal proteins that can mean that your body ends up leaching calcium from your bones to counteract the acidity from the protein in the milk. A further irony is that low-fat milk ends up having a higher concentration of protein per pint than whole milk, so while you save on fat you're ramping up the demand on calcium in your system.

Yeah, bacon is a tap in (there's a Benteke/Dann joke here somewhere), as are sweets and beer. It's the broader topic of the deleterious effects of meat that gets overlooked.

As I mentioned in another thread way back, Michaela, my 18th birthday treat (in 1977) was in The Old Mill in Bexley - a Berni Inn, or was it a Schooner Inn? One of those. You've just described 2 of the 3 courses I had!

I was nicknamed Mr Bacon after a penalty shoot out that I lost a cup final for our team back a while. Something to do with lean back.
