We have to be a bit ruthless here at times, but keep Roy in while we need him rather than come to an agreement months in advance without us having the safety of knowing we have a good recruit coming in. He of course loves the job.

Ideally, I'd like to see Roy retire at the end of the season with a great replacement coming in whom we're already lining up. However, I have absolutely no faith in the board to manage that transition and find a good replacement properly. Keeping Hodgson another season might sound like a safe bet, because we'd almost certainly stay up, but I think we'll lose Wilf, AWB, maybe Luka and Townsend. Our best players leaving would mean that we'd then have the terrifying prospect of starting the 2020/21 season with a new manager and new key players, and just as I have no faith in the board to replace the manager well, I have even less faith in our player recruitment. Tricky times. At least Wilf is doing his best to deter any big bids with his performances.

Tricky times. At least Wilf is doing his best to deter any big bids with his performances. Good post. I am happy just staying in the Premier League as I am a realistic hard bitten Palace fan. However if you are a player in demand you may wonder what next season will bring. I can't blame any of our players if they move on to a bigger club challenging for trophies. If the Manure come in for AWB I can't see us holding onto him he will walk into that position at Old Trafford unlike City where he might be benched. I appreciate what Roy has done but our best chance of these players staying is a new manager.

Roy has done a great deal for us. He stabilised the team, brought some great results and introduced the discipline and rigour we were missing. Without Roy we would probably now be playing in the Championship. We should be very thankful he arrived when he did. The problem is that he now has nothing more to give. Surely there's a majority of Palace fans who'd agree we've become, on most occasions, cautious and predictable and nolonger a great team to watch. Everyone and anyone can get stale in their job and this is what I fear has happened to Roy. At the end of this season we need to thank him and move on. My worry is that the board and those who control policy aren't thinking of long-term development but only of keeping a steady hold on things. There are a handful of talented younger managers out there we should be looking at. We need to keep the likes of Wilf, Wan Bissaka and Townsend excited, keeping Roy or bringing in another old war horse isn't the answer. Thank you Roy, now let's move forward into the next phase of Palace development.
