I am not so sure that is the only reason it has not been dominating the headlines. There have been two major stories which have both involved mass casualties: Las Vegas, and the wild fires in California. There has also been the Weinstein case which is getting a load of airtime too. Also, the fall out from the devastation in Puerto Rico. Oh, and the case you mentioned was on NPR and Fox, both of which are nationwide and represent both ends of the political spectrum. That does not mean I think the media does a great job, they don't, and I think they are inconsistent, but they are not as bad as the extremes of politics like to make out.
