I'm guessing that for Wood to make the cut Durham would have to bowl first on Monday and Woody would need to perform well with no after effects otherwise he may be deemed too much of a risk and will join his Durham team mate Graham Onions in having one excellent season for England with the rest of his career wrecked by injury

The England Lions are also touring Australia this winter so anyone performing well could be called up at short notice if needed and this could be Dan Lawrence's route into the main team along with Mason Crane

For me I'm more bothered about how we play - all this play your natural game and the shorter forms, has meant many of ours guys have forgotten how to reeally knuckle down, and be defensive when needs must.

He may wallop the ball all over the place in limited overs cricket but Test Matches don't have the same fielding restrictions or batsmen friendly rules and I think that likes of Starc and Cummings will eat him for breakfast. I wonder whether Malan did enough in the last Test to squeeze into the side

There's something to that. I think it's also fair that some batsman are naturally aggressive as well. But it's definitely the case that front line batsman play more aggressively against the moving ball than before....which isn't that great for most of their averages. There are only so many Gowers out there that can do that and still average quite high.....though it has to be said that Gower's test average is quite a bit higher than his county......He was picked on ability rather than stats....I suppose like I feel Lawrance and Crane should be. I wonder whether Malan did enough in the last Test to squeeze into the side I see Hales as good against fast bowling a little suspect against short pitched but I think he's come on since then.....But playing him at five I just see him as a better option than Malan.....thanks to stubborn and ultimately poor picks this summer we have a lack of proven test batting options. Woakes is a third seamer and Porter a front line one. So I've picked him on that score.

Late Gooch yeah....Boycott was an exceptional talent that doesn't come around that often.....I'm hoping that Hameed is the modern version. Considering how Gower batted it's a bit surprising that he batted as the number three....but an average of 44 at a time when pitches were less batter friendly says something I suppose.
