We're all familiar with the idiom and we all know exactly what it means. Yes, all games are important, but in our position winning against the teams that you're in a relegation battle with does you the biggest favours. I thought that it was a pedantic and unnecessary point he was making as he knew damn well what was being asked. Wins against the top six are a bonus, but to stay up you have to beat the teams around you. Stating the bleeding obvious, that a game can't be a must win if the opposition plays better than you isn't helpful. Rather than spending time on semantics, I'd prefer to hear a more positive message from Roy or at least some fighting talk.

What do you want him to say ..Yes it's a must win fame and if we don't eon we're f****d. Listen to the whole of his pc, there's plenty of positivity and fight in there.

If he were to say it's a must win game, it heaps more pressure on the players to perform which can work for some but as we've witnessed in the past against Sunderland, Swansea, Burnley (the list goes on), it hasn't for us. So maybe playing the game down will help the players.

I think you have made a very good point. Must win games really come into play when for example you have to win the last two games to get six points to stay in the league. The game against WHU is a pretty essential game to get points from and to avoid getting detached from the rest of the league. We ARE bottom of the PL and we do need to gain points pretty consistently now. We all know including obviously the players that we have to aim for 40 points or so by May next year, and we need to be making steadyish progress towards that target as soon as possible. The team did in my view play very well at Newcastle and certainly didnt deserve to lose. We certainly need a good performance plus points against WHU tomorrow, but it isnt yet a must win at all costs situation.

I think we are kidding ourselves if we believe that, we are five points adrift from WHU and they are in the relegation fight with us so at home we must be expected to win!

Why in gods name do people get concerned about what RH says to the media in a poxy press conference.

After the mess he inherited after FDB he has turned things around massively. We were unlucky to lose against Newcastle but the most important thing is we actually look like a decent football team.

He is 100% the best man for the job to get us out of this mess and I will be shocked if we dont beat West Ham.

Hopefully when we win tomorrow he might get some praise.

There is a massive difference between a "must win game" and a game one is "expected to win". The former is an idiom, like "a six-pointer", that (everyone knows) means a game that, due to circumstances, has assumed a greater importance, in this case for survival. The latter is a game that one can reasonably be expected to win based upon the relative merits of the teams. No one was suggesting to Hodgson yesterday that we should be expected to beat West Ham, but that it would be an important game to win, which it is. If we don't win those sort of games, especially at home, we're making our task increasingly difficult, week on week.
