Very, very talented man; a great songwriter. Also true to the spirit of American rock in the tradition of the Byrds.

I saw Tom and the Heartbreakers supporting Nils Lofgren at Hammersmith May '77. They were very impressive, obvious they were destined for greater things.

Very sad he should go at a relatively young age, but he has left a fabulous musical legacy for discerning fans. RIP Tom!

I went to that gig.

As Pikester mentions, there is an excellent documentary on Tom and the band.

RIP Tom

WHY NOT STING!!! My fav from very early in Toms very long career. [Link] Why is it always the great that get taken? On a personal note(I hope you don't mind) a pal of mine, who is only 31 and a fantastic guitarist and all-round-top-bloke,is gravely ill in hospital with possibly a day maybe two then that's his lot. So here's my personal tribute to Rhys playing with Zeus. [Link] Gonna miss you Rhys! RIP Tom. Ollie's Dad,Ash.

[Link] An update on my pal Rhys. He sadly passed away yesterday afternoon in the sunshine whilst in the garden at Medway Hospital. RIP (Riff In Peace)Rhys.

Great video, Crystal! What a sad loss to music world and a great template for any aspiring rock guitarist to learn from.

Not only was Tom Petty a great musician, but one with a true love of music and a fighter against the big companies - he bankrupted himself fighting one company over what he thought was over-pricing of his album, and waged another couple of lengthy legal wrangles with others over his rights as a musician, so a man with a social conscience too.

RIP Tom,

He was an active supporter of the Midnight Mission in California, whose "program services, which include food and safe shelter, bridge housing, comprehensive addiction recovery, an education center, job training, domestic violence counseling and more for homeless individuals and families in Southern California".

American Girl was and remains a great song ...though I think Roger McGuinn's version is even better then the Heartbreakers'..Story was Tom said McGuinn could bring it out first but then the record company went over his head.

Free Fallin'..great post break up and not seeing the kids much song..

I don't think McGuinn knew Petty before he heard the song on the radio; he certainly didn't cover it til months after the 1st TP & Heartbreakers album was released. However, TPs American Girl is very much in the McGuinn style, and McGuinn's version is very good too!
