Personally the formation and players used was a masterstroke by Roy. Totally bamboozled Chelsea. Trouble is the cat is now out of the bag and everyone will now be set up ready, well as ready as you can be for a player like Zaha.
If Wilf and Andros can keep this form for the next 6/7 games and Ladapo gets time off the bench we could cover till Benteke is back. 4-4-2 with Wilf off of Benteke could be special.

It's a great ace to have up our sleeve. Still think our strongest formation will be to have a big man up top, but yesterday opens up a second option up top, something which we've been crying out for all season.

Roy seriously earned his crust yesterday. Bold tactics, well organised, and terrified one of the giant teams of the league.

What I found interesting was how, at times, we dealt with a lack of height up front. Jules would launch the ball and we either didn't challenge or got beaten in the air. The great thing was it didn't matter as when they headed it out our midfield placed themselves in a position to get the ball from the header and start an attack. It was a very, very clever tactic.

Yes the midfield picked up 90% of Chelsea's headed clearances as we left them unchallenged most times. Playing with your back to a centre half requires a very specific type of player. They have to have no fear and willingly jump backwards into certain pain coming in the opposite direction, blind. Yesterday proved that Wilf definitely is not comfortable challenging for high balls with his back to goal, so he just ran a little interference to impede the clearance headers.

A big factor yesterday was that Wilf was clearly not match fit. Had he been we would have won by more. Chelsea got lucky

The Spanish Waiter will be all over this game plan for the next week. It worked wonderfully yesterday but Newcastle will be expecting it when next Saturday comes around, so we absolutely must have a Plan B that we work on before then.

Yesterday's plan A of Wilf and Townsend up front was forced on us by Benteke's injury. But it's a very viable plan B and at least Roy seems to be working on options - something we've been sorely, sorely lacking recently.

I'd be quite happy to see us use the same team as yesterday, except I'd replace schlupp with RLC, the difference in quality between them is significant imo.. Plus even if he was fit I'd bench beneteke and keep zaha and Townsend up front. I'm not the manager though!

I'm a big fan of the formation and I thought when we lined up in the same way in the cup against Huddersfield (with Sako and Lee) it worked really well then too. It worked really well yesterday especially due to the fact that Chelsea can't really cope with wide forwards, we played Wilf and Benteke up top last season at the bridge in a similar formation and Allardyce revealed in an interview that he told them to mainly start off wide and Chelsea couldn't really cope with it then either. I think it could work in the future however, I would prefer to have Wilf on the wing so we can get him on the ball more

I noticed this too but was it a tactic or just that we were quicker on the second ball.

I'm giving it as a Roy master plan

Thing is, the team have now proved that they can play in a fluid fashion. Meaning that they can now be moved around into a few different formations and hopefully produce the goods. This could make it very hard for defences to be set up in a way that will shut us out of the game.

Big Sam actually came up with this tactic last season at the Bridge. Although it was Wilf and Benteke up top, he still played them out wide which confused the hell out of the back three of Chelsea.
