Not today he won't.

I hope he doesn't suffer a similar fate to Gadaffi and Hussain. I don't approve of such barbarity even for the likes of him.

I doubt that will be the case. The guy is a 'national hero' to too many in the country, with too much political leverage to execute. More likely, he'll be kept under somekind of house arrest until he dies (probably soon - as he's stepping down).

It seems its more about ensuring that his wife doesn't become the next leader, and curtailing his influence to ensure that there is not a Mugabe dynasty

I don't think he'll hang himself, there' probably no rope in the shops. Perhaps they could utilise his organisational skills, I understand there are a few whelk stalls there that need a shake up.

The guy is old, and sick. He's on borrowed time (apparently the poorly kept secret is he has syphilis). His stepping down pretty much seems like a sign of the end being close. The military will just let him see out his days, keep him reasonably quiet and well fed, and shuffle him out when they need him.

Likely as not the VP or an election is likely. I doubt the military are too keen on taking over what is arguably the one of the biggest messes to clear up and progress from in history.

It'd be like 'becoming the next leader of the Sudan or Somalia', no one really wants that job. Not anyone trust worthy anyway.

What about someone who is familiar with the communist utopia that is Kerala? They could implement those policies there and soon the country would be full of wheat fields swaying in the breeze while happy workers whistle the Internationale.

I don't think Kerala is a communist country, it has a representative democracy, the communist party are only part of a coalition government, as its part of the Left Democratic Front.

Thanks for the clarification. I heard from somewhere that it was a shining example of how communism works, but perhaps I was being misinformed (perhaps those blo**y Russians again?) You tend to find that any country with 'Democratic' in its title is usually in reality, the opposite (apologies to anyone who lives in a country with 'Democratic' in its name - no offence meant, please don't spray anything in my face at an airport.)

I think this should be on the Saturday Night Feeler thread

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

Like the Democratic Republic of the Congo (where the democracy vote is whether to rape you, before shooting you, or the Democratic Republic of North Korea, where the democracy is whether to make up some outrageously untrue story about the leader, before raping and then shooting you.

Its the national equivalent of people who say they're trustworthy. Anyone who has to state that they can be trusted, is inherently untrustworthy.

Of course the formal name of the Cleggies is 'Liberal Democrats'. (apologies, in the unlikely event, that anyone here is a member.)
