I reckon the politics of envy are at work here.

that's exactly what I'm saying - I should not be penalised for earning more (or doing more hours) over and above the percentage tax that everyone pays

But surely the amount you earn is all added up as an annual figure.
There is a way of sitting just below the threshold of higher rate and taking more home.
Take a mathematician to work that out.
