A couple of beers I haven't seen for ages are Lamot and Grolsch with that distinctive flip-top.

I remember back in the 70s, consuming copious amounts of Lamot in the 'Rising Sun', Spa Hill and walking home in a straight line was nigh on impossible !

Beulah Spa, Rising Sun, The Ref and Whistle at the very bottom...Not a bad little road that for drinking establishments. The Conq always pulled me back though.

When I used to frequent the 'Rising Sun' 'Mine host' was a chap whom I think was called Dennis and I think his wife was Canadian.

Yes I have been in the Ref&Whistle which was adorned in Palace colours and the Conquering Hero but never set foot in the Reform Tavern, not too far from the Rising Sun.

Do they still serve Castlemaine XXXX anywhere? I haven't seen it for ages. It's the nastiest beer I've ever tasted and beating Foster's is quite an achievement, Broce.

When i lived over in Aus me and a few mates went on the castlemaine brewery tour.
The tour guide was doing his best to keep us engaged, as we were just trying to get to the tasting room for the freebies, when we got to the part of the tour where the beer was put in barrels there was some of the old wooden ones stacked up. The guide ask the assembled group 'why do you think they used to put XXXX on the barrels?' I piped up 'because your'e not allowed to write s*it on there'. Needless to say I wasn't very popular with my colleagues when we only got a short visit to the tasting room.

It was withdrawn from UK markets 8 years ago. It was brewed in the UK and wasn't as strong as the £real" version brewed and sold in Australia.

Fosters beer is a bit of a joke with Aussies as they don't like it so export it all to the less discerning palates of the Brits

Australia does have some nice beers but they keep them to themselves. When I was over there visiting family I was drinking Boag's Premium which is very nice

Indeed. I became very partial to the James Squire craft beers when I was over there last year. Not cheap (nothing is in Aus) but very paletable

The Exchange rate is not that good at the moment.

A few years ago I met some Australians in the UK who were working over here and commented how cheap it was to buy beers etc in our supermarkets compared to in Australia.

But in Australia they have a number of BYO (Bring Your Own) restaurants.

I can't stand any golden ale, it just don't agree with my tastebuds. Have a few different ones at the Palace beer festival and all leave me gagging

getting into dark beers now and what a flavour explosion they are. Some in a bad way...

have little time for your Carlsberg's, Fosters and that s***e but when you need a drop they do the job

Changed a lot in 20 years since I went. Three dollars to the pound then. We lived like Kings even on a budget.

According to my sister who has lived in Sydney for over 30 years the big problem isn't the exchange rate but general inflation.

We last went 10 years ago and the exchange rate was wonderfully weighted in our favour but since then not only has the exchange rate got my worse but prices in Aussie restaurants have more than doubled.

I was also in Australia some 20 years ago and recall the excellent exchange rate.I think at the moment it is around 1.6 or 1.7 Australian dollars to the Pound.

But I understand the quality of the food is good.
Cheaper food can be found in their surf clubs or RSL (Retired Servicemens League) clubs.
Fo really expensive food just take a trip to Noosa !
