When Johnny Salad broke into the England team he was absolutely on fire then cruelly injured and never reached that peak again. He was a great crosser of the ball though.

As has been said - if Wilf was to perform at this level for the rest of this season and maybe next then it would be very difficult not to have him in an All Time Palace XI.

He is carrying us at the moment and just needs to score more regularly and then the rest of the football world will be all over him.

Many of the players you mention above are also favs of mine, however you could not possibly suggest that players like Murphy or Nicholas are anywhere near as good as Wilf.

Agreed. John was just so solid in attack and defence as a wing back. Outstanding really. And when we came third he was certainly one of the best in a first XI packed with some genuinely very good players. Wilf is the stand out player in a first XI with only two or three very good players.

And John's time was when the rules of football favoured the defences before they were changed to favour the attackers.

Wilf is fantastic and so was John. But if either of them were chosen to play for today's very top teams Bayern or Juve or PSG then I would have to say John is the one who would fit in more.

It's so hard to compare players across eras, isn't it? Wilf is just a joy to watch and I think he loves playing for the club (no doubt the ~£110-120k a week probably doesn't hurt).

In my lifetime of watching, Wrightie and Wilf would be the ones. Genuinely special talents who just had something in their DNA that others don't -- a fire to make a difference. Salako really didn't do it over a sustained period. He'd just got there and then got injured and never scaled those same heights ever again. Very sad, really.

Btw, the idea that we don't have really classy players is daft. We have many.

I still rate Ian Wright up there for us, he was excitingly classy you didn't know what he would do and although that is similar to Wilf, Wrighty did it over a period of time for us, I was gutted when he left for Arsenal. I think Wilf has the potential to be better, I'd just like to see his goal ratio go up
