Edited by adrian b (08 Nov 2017 10.20pm) Not being picky but it was Ernie Whalley, who took over after Venables, big into fitness and work rate, dropped Hilaire, tightened us up, our defending had been a joke, massive mistake to replace him with a past-it returning Big Mal, he lasted 5 or 6 games before Gradi came in (thanks to Noades), who bought in the likes of Steve Ketteridge, Brian Bason and a past-it David Price (from Liam Brady's Arsenal) and whatever great things he did at Crewe was not great with us but hired total mediocrity. But great Palace servant David Wright who played as sweeper for us under Doogie learnt to play in every position on the pitch under Gradi at Crewe, for me david Wright was just about the best reader of a game I've seen in 45 years of supporting Palace (though far from the most skillful), he's with Norwich youth atm and will one day be a great coach/manager imho - and he credits much of what he knows down to Gradi, I have no comment on the other issues, it's just sad that so many people in the workplace take the I'm alright Jack attitude to its ultimate extreme - can't comment on his part in that stuff, but it seems probable he overlooked things, I went to a catholic boys school in the 70s, subsequent revelations emerged - I was never a victim thank god, but no doubt many blind eyes were turned, no excuses but that was the world we were in and some chose to take the easy option by not lifting the lid.

Neill - to be fair you could of picked anyone from about 6 in the starting 11 from that era and they wouldn't of been out of place with that title.

He did, and he rewarded him by nearly killing some Cardiff player and getting a six match ban. We signed him anyway. I quite liked Claude he was entertaining, he certainly wasn't one to shy out of a challenge.
