The shooter was ex military with some mental issues, he was denied a gun license but managed to get an assault rifle anyway.
I live in Miami where there seems to be drive by multiple victim shootings every week. But other than these ranting lunatics, 99% of mass shootings are in poor area's.
I know it sounds weird, and i am not trying to justify, and i dont own nor would i ever own a gun, but its is a mental problem, not a gun problem.

Society here has massive problems, mostly drug related, both legal and prescription.

Seriously, what sane county would have elected this bozo ?

You can't shoot someone with your mind, whether it's a healthy one or one with problems.

No guns, no shootings. That simple.

That right there is a serious gun issue. Someone who's been turned down for a gun licence, being able to obtain an AR-15 assault rifle.

Doesn't matter what your mental health status is, if you can get an Assault Rifle, without having been granted a firearms license, that system of control is f**ked.

Is there anywhere else in the world where that would be acceptable, that someone who can't own a handgun can own an assault rifle?

Pretty much true. Granted, you could go crazy with knives or an axe but then how many people could you realistically kill? Certainly not 26 and injure another 20 odd on top.

AR-15 Semi-Automatic Assault rifle, 90-120 rounds a minute (allowing for re-loads), with a range of 550m - makes that whole killing folks a damn sight easier.

307 shootings in 309 days.

That is 4 times the total deaths of 30 years of Northern Ireland troubles, or more than 4 times the death toll of 9/11. utterley utterley bonkers.

The US only lost something like 4 times that many in the Vietnam war, over a 10 year period - and that's including accidents.

Which was an unacceptable death toll for many in the US, leading to the end of that war and US retreat.

Pretty much. If its a mental health issue, do something about the appalling state of mental health care in the US (at the very least).

I think they're are always mental health issues involved when someone decides that they're going to shoot as many people as possible (even in terrorism) that's just not the product of a rational or sane mind.

And of course its a gun issue. The bloke used an AR-15 assault rifle to shoot 46 people (with a gun that holds 30 rounds). Of course that's a problem - It holds 30 rounds, all of which are designed specifically to cause as much harm as possible to human beings.

Merica!

This highlights the dangers of powerful lobbies and identity politics.
Politicians running scared of offending certain groups. We must resist this madness at all costs in this country. It is anti reason.

26 dead, 20 injured. That's a 56% kill rate; no one achieves that with any other legally available weapon.

There were 689 people in that town; this shooter killed 4% of them.

Remember Columbine? That doesn't even crack the top 10 any more.

This is out of control, and it's become so out of control because the people with the power to do something offer nothing but "thoughts and prayers" when this happens again...and again...and again. This isn't a gun problem or a mental health problem; it's a leadership problem and those with the power are doing nothing.

Well the attack in Nice, or the bomb in Manchester, shows that you can still kill a huge number of people in a short amount of time, but they have to be in one condensed place.

With guns though, like the Mumbai attack, they don't need to be and the attack can carry on for a far longer period of time.

The difference is one relies on chance and success at the first attempt, while the other requires neither.

Well put Ray, I totally agree with you (for once!).

I think that in every war since Vietnam, that the US has been in, its suffered more casualties a home from firearms, than it has done in those conflict. And if I remember rightly, that's only because that 1969's Tet offensive skewed the numbers.

For those that are saying 'it isn't a gun problem' - how much do you think the murder rate would increase in the UK if gun ownership was as normal as having a microwave as it is across the pond.

We have 'mental' people too. It would be off the scale.

It is a leadership problem but it is also very much a certain attitude about guns problem.

I can honestly say I have never met someone who has said they 'would like to own a gun' and I bet that goes for most of us. In some areas us Brits are most civilised still and a fine example to others.

There are some crazy-but-true stats about gun ownership over here. Albeit there's at least one gun for every man, woman and child in America, half of them are owned by only 15% of the population. 35% own the other half and half of us own none at all.

If the politicians had the nads to take this to the people - just the old assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 - I bet they'd get a majority in favor of the ban. It's the higher and tougher road, though, which is why they won't do it.
