I like the idea, but it seems rather unlikely, that there is an entire thread of alternative universes based on when I had a w***, or made a cup of tea at a different time.

Because that's a lot of alternative dimensions just based on when I have a w*** or not.

Yeah, it all seems a bit unnecessary. It's a bit narrow to think of it in terms of human decisions as well.

We were just as stupid back then allowing such people in country. Same with letting the parasitical Marx squat in London preaching mayhem. Then we did the same with mass murder Ho Chi Minh. We never learn.
Jack the Ripper was 1880s. (My ancestors lived in Hanbury Street, Whitechapel for a while, where one of the Ripper victims was found. But they had left by the 1880s for the golden pastures of Croydon.)

There's good circumstantial evidence that Charles Letchmere was 'Jack'.
Any relation?

I think WWI was always coming - the age of empires was dying out, new powers arising, and it created a powder keg of tensions and politics, that effectively were ignited by one guy being shot!

I think you can change some of the patterns and some of the factors, but at some point it was clear that there was always going to be another war - akin to the Napoleonic conflicts.

The difference is between then, and 1914, the advance in technology and industry of war was incredible.

Fortunately, The Bomb has kept tribalism and expansionism at bay for our lifetimes. I suppose we can't ask for much more. There will be an 'endgame' sooner or later I'm sure when human society reaches crisis point.

No Letchmeres in my family tree!

I tend towards the James Maybrick theory

He died in 1889 which would explain why the murders stopped and then there are the diary and the watch.

Lechmere was discovered at the scene of one of the murders by a policeman while the kill was fresh. He worked as a meat carter and some of the murders were on his route to work and happened around the time the would have been passing, according to research.

And when you say the islands themselves aren't '"successful" what parameters are you using? Where is the failure? The native bunch I saw on BBC this morning seemed very positive in general about the place.

I wonder how many are below the IMF definition of the Poverty Line?

I think the diary is forged.

For me it's between Aaron Kosminsky and Charles Cross.

Cross was Lechmere. He used the name Cross.

Neither the watch or diary have been confirmed as forgeries as far as I know.

There was a recent documentary on History channel where the American, HH Holmes was investigated as a Ripper candidate. His known story is way more interesting than 'Jack'. It was a bit daft but I confess that I kept watching because it had a very hot ex FBI lady in it.

I think the bomb changed everything. The cold war was definitely, in my book WWIII, except that instead of being fought directly between the national superpowers of the time (as WWI and WWII), they were fought through proxies across the world.

But a metric s**t ton of people died in those wars, conflicts, Coups, revolutions, bush fire wars and regimes of convenience. Its just they weren't the history makers (Vietnam and Afghanistan aside).

But in the far east, the middle east, south American and Africa, the Sino-Soviet and the Western Capitalist proxies were directly fighting one another (usually with backing of one side or the other).

The bomb just meant that it didn't spill over (and maybe the Cuban missile crisis kind of set the rules for that).

Sums it up. Proxy war was and is the name of the game.
