I reckon with Benteke up front, wilf and andros wide, RLC just behind, we'll score goals. ...what we probably need in jan is a smaller nippier forward in case plan A doesn't work...

Benteke from his Villa days was a monster, now he loses the ball too easy and his touch is simply not good enough. Talks about Chelsea interested? Take 45 mill and get Ulloa (Leicester) and Ings (Liverpool) for much less in January...maybe tempt Chelsea to sell RLC as well.

So you would swap him for someone who is 4 years older and who has a weaker scoring record (despite his goals for them the Brighton fans I knew weren't too sorry to see him go and Leicester fans don't seem too keen to keep him either) and a player who has played 6 games in the last two years and who also has a weaker scoring record? I try and respect opinions, but that's just bonkers.

With Zaha back Bentenke will prove the doubters wrong (in terms of goals...maybe not on the effort front!) and then hopefully we can bring in some competition for him in January (in addition to a returning Wickham).

You do understand, and if not I'll explain... it's our silly fans trying to ignor facts to suit the feeling they have that he's not actually a quality player.

Similar to Wilf making more chances than most yet still gets accused of not being consistent. Except the facts would suggest he consistently creates chances...

We need to get behind Benteke when he's back as we desperately need him to hit the ground running.

Really!

I can't really understand what you mean here. He wins more than anyone else, but loses some too. He cannot win them all. What do you expect?

If we didn't hit it long to him, he wouldn't get the opportunity to win/lose aerial duals. He would neither win or lose, as the ball isn't aerial!

Of course he cannot win them all. I mean that I think he's good with his head, but I think there are better target men for winning the ball and that other teams don't play as many long balls which is why their headed stats are less impressive. Their forwards have less aerial duels.

I think he could be better troubling defenders and letting them know they're in for a game. For his size he is not as physically imposing as he could be.

I don't mean to knock him as a player. I'm grateful we have him, his goal return is very good, and I think he is one of the best headers of the ball in the premier league when he's in the box.

I'm hoping for much more from him than he seemed to be offering recently. Under De Boer he looked laboured and even uninterested - then again, so did most of the team.

Roy does seem to prefer 442 although he may go with the 433 but getting someone wether it's wilf, andros or RLC to get closer to tekkers when possible as I feel FDB tactics didn't suit him leaving him isolated which doesn't suit his style and with wilf and andros playing as a two up front I feel 'hope' they may be more inclined to want to play off him.

People going on about how Benteke was a different player at Villa...I think highlights determine how you view a player as we see a lot more of him now than when he was at Villa. His stats for the last few seasons have barely changed.

I have actually just written a blogpost on this very subject - have a read!

He loses a lot of them too though. That stat really surprised me, but is very impressive. I feel though that his rate of winning them would not be so impressive, and that this stat is partly due to our style of play and hitting it long to Benteke so often. Some of the headed goals he's scored are phenomenal, but I think Murray was better at winning aerial duels and retaining possession (not trying to turn this into a Murray thread)

Murray has averaged 47% aerial duel success rate since 13/14, Benteke 57% since 12/13.

Murray averages 4.7 possession losses/ unsuccessful touches per game, Benteke 4.8.

I'd say based on those stats Benteke edges it.

Wow, I find that a bit surprising. But if that's the stats, fair enough.

I suppose my opinions come from feeling Murray worked harder (Benteke's running stats may be better, i don't know). From games like beating Man city at home and Sunderland away where his graft created goals. The only Benteke goal I can think of in the same mould was when he scored against us, pinching it off Scott Dann. Still, I don't care where the goals come from and can't wait for him to come back.

He was the complete player at Villa! Winning the ball, taking on players, create chances and of course, scoring goals. Now he's just a pale shadow of that player...whatever way you look at it!! Ex. lost the ball at half way line vs Man City just before halftime for their 1-0 goal.....? Yeah, you are right - Tekkers!

Victor 43's blog on Benteke was informative. In the Spurs game, it was striking how many aerial contests such as throw ins and goal kicks/kicks from keepers' hands we did not win. With Benteke we win a lot of those kind of balls. It's true, however that his isolation in the early part of the season meant it was ineffective. Because of this impact and because of his record over several seasons as a goal-scorer, having him available is potentially crucial to our success. Him with A.J would have been effective, but finding another A.J or playing a 2 up front are options we may not have.
