I'm afraid that I do use NHS as I have type 2 diabetes despite not being overweight. My wife is a staff nurse in a local hospital and until recently she was on a respiratory ward. She claims that the majority of her patients with respiratory problems were overweight, had diabetes and many smoked. There again many of the nurses seemed to be overweight too

The main cost to the NHS of diabetics is the increased risk of associated problems like heart attacks, strokes, amputations and blindness etc

In principle I am in favour of minimum pricing. This will not impact pubs and restaurants but corner shops and supermarkets who are selling booze at ridiculous cheap prices. Of course this is not a panacea and we need more alcohol treatment centers but we have a drinking culture in this country that needs to be addressed. Raising the price will not stop an alcoholic but it may deter the next generation from starting the drinking culture. The Smoking campaign has had some success and whilst there will always be diehards the level of smokers and take up is falling. I don''t like the nanny state but sometimes governments have to make a statement.

They could go to the top level and use the lift rather than hold everybody up. Christmas is 6 weeks away. Those tubs of chocolates 12 feet from the door are an essential before the fruit and veg in view. That should be legislated. I hope that connection between gym and state becomes much more commonplace. If someone wants to stuff themselves full of cream cakes then fine. That's the cream....eh...sorry...that's the price of freedom.

Starting the nation young in maintaining good health has had some schools focusing on non team sports and more individual exercising and classes. Girls and girl only classes are seeing this having a positive effect.

I know this is off topic but I just saw the discussion on diabetes and have to tell this story. I have a minor medical condition that requires daily medicine which I have to pay for. It is not lifestyle related. I exercise 2/3 times a week and have given up alcohol (I was a heavy drinker) and watch what I eat. In short I am a model NHS patient as the nurse told me when I had my health check. My mate is a type 2 diabetic because of his lifestyle. No exercise, binge drinks and is massively overweight due to his poor diet. He takes 5 different medications for various diabetic related illnesses all of which could be either cured or greatly improved through lifestyle improvement. He has no intention of doing this. in addition he cheerfully told me that as he is diabetic he is entitled to free Viagra. But you don't have a girlfriend? So? I just sell them in the pub for £5 a tablet. In short whilst I pay to be a model patient not only is he costing the NHS a small fortune he is actually profiting from it. Go figure. Anyway just had to get that of my perfectly healthy chest.

The truth here, and its an important one, not everyone who eats and drinks too much develops type 2 diabetes - Its a correlation that's applicable only on a statistical scale, on an individual scale its really impossible to determine why patient x does, and patient y doesn't, despite similar lifestyles. And if your mate is selling his Viagra, he's breaking the 1963 Medicines Act (and possibly the 1972 Misuse of Drugs act) - both of which carry potential prison sentences. The problem here isn't that the laws are wrong, or that society is doing the wrong thing, its that your mate I'm afraid to say is a bit of a c**t. But a lot of people end up in a similar position, without acting with such self disregard. I've met people who aren't overweight, don't smoke, aren't great drinkers who by dint of the biological lottery have issues with high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease etc.
