Hi, I had an unsatisfactory reference provided while applying for a new job. Can I take my previous employer to the small claims court for 'negligent misstatement'? I am confident I have the evidence to back this up. What kind of compensation would l be entitled to?

A bad reference is like
" Yes ABC worked here between X and Y date.
That means your not the model employee; for them anyhow.
I don't think they can write negative things in a literal sense.
Only what I've read and heard in the past.
I stand to be corrected by legal eagle maybe.

HR professional here - have you seen the reference? If not you can request it by law. Beat to go to the company that supplied it rather than the one receiving but ask both. Pm me if you need.
