Joel has been a great servant to the club & played his part in taking us forward since he arrived but if he signs a new contract I hope he will only be a squad player.

He was my player of the season in our 1st season back in the Prem but other than the past 4 or 5 months he has been poor in the previous season & a half.

He is too slow & he is not good enough offensively like a modern day full back needs to be.Certainly good enough to be a squad player but if we want to progress in this league we need a better quicker option.

20/20 hindsight is a wonderful thing, however you missed my point which wasn't a criticism of Ward it was a genuine concern that in Gray and Vardy it was a case of 2 of the quickest players in the prem up against one of our slowest defenders when we had our quickest defender on the bench.

As it happened, Ward had a great game as did the whole Palace team so things went our way, but on another day he might have been found out.

I am not a Ward hater, in fact he has been a solid performer for many years, its just that his lack of pace is now beginning to show.

It would be safe to say that you have not read my 28 April reply to a post similar to yours. Another one quoting hindsight.

It's obvious to me that his perceived lack of pace, which you keep banging on about even to the last sentence, despite neither Gray nor Vardy having the better of him, makes him a player who uses his brain and experience to cope better than one who relies on pace alone.Firstly by making sure he is not exposed to the tricks of a speedy opponent. Secondly, by anticipating where a ball is going to be placed to intercept it.

His clearance off the line from Vardy (your speedy threat to him) in the 15th min is a perfect example of the second point, and changed the course of the game. Two minutes later we scored and I saw only my second 5 nil win in top flight football since Dec 1972 when we beat Manchester United and Manager Frank O'Farrell lost his job the next day. Didn't save us from relegation in May 1973 though.

The hare does not always win the race, not when the tortoise is using his head. Ultimately, The Man, with considerably more experience than either of us, did what he was paid to do and made the right choice as he did again against Stoke.

As they say in the Aussie vernacular "Right Call"

Joel ward is one of OUR slowest defenders but he’s not one of the premierships. He’s not that slow.

Exactly my sentiments which I failed to express. as I started upon my reply to his response to my earlier post. My initial post still has not produced the apology, grudging or otherwise that I had hoped for, so I am wondering if I should serve up the humble pie.

Get well soon Joel, and please please sign the new contract, as I know you want to do. I would imagine that the sticking point is not the money, but rather the recognition it signals of your loyalty and dedication to the club over the many years of service.

But, of course, the reality is that AWB is the future. And when he is better,The Man will play him regularly, and Joel will be a very good squad player like Kelly who is also an unsung hero. AWB needs to be nurtured like a young plant. We do not want to place the burden of expectation on him like we did with our own poor Joniesta.

Hopefully not the last time. Against Leicester last week, Ward was certainly getting back to his old self and justifiably keeping others out the team. He is a good pro, would not cost the earth to keep, him and Palace through and through.

Do you think we should give him a years contract, a sort of loyalty bonus so he gets paid while recovering, we might even need him at some stage latter in the season.

His experience could be instrumental in developing AWB's reading of the game & positional awareness so why not.

Will this be five? It's gonna be five! It IS five!
