I have genuinely never understood why the BBC gives so much time and money to this event. Most of the contenders don't have too much in the way of personality, so many sporting achievements have been later shown to be affected by drugs (not something that was common in the earlier years of it, I admit), and frankly I fail to see how you can pick one winner from one sport, when there are so many high achievers in their own field and it is like comparing apples to bricks. Anyway, if you are a consistent winner or spend years at the top level, you get a Knighthood or a gong, which is presumably a greater recognition of your talent than an accolade from Sue Barker!

They make about half a million quid in ticket sales. It fills an entire evening of prime time TV, i.e. the cost savings against buying something/multiple things to show instead. It keeps the sports stars sweet so they want to do things for/with the BBC. They've already got Lineker, Barker, Logan etc under contract, might as well make them earn it. Other than Lance Armstrong, Shane Warne and Linford Christie I can't think of too many winners who have gone on to be proven drug cheats.

It's hard to look past Anthony Joshua, he has huge support and comes across as a personable and respectful guy. I'll be shocked if he doesn't win it.
