I would have expected that experience to have had the opposite effect to the one it appears to have done. I would have thought you might have now had more sympathy for those down on their luck, or otherwise disadvantaged, than you routinely show. Instead, it seems to have hardened your attitudes rather than soften them. I watched the "Pride of Britain" award show on ITV this evening. Such shows normally pass me by. Watching luvvies gush to each other is not something I enjoy. This though, featured ordinary people doing extraordinary things and was genuinely inspiring. Such a refreshing contrast to some of the attitudes to be found here. One young man, a Syrian refugee and a Muslim, especially so. If you didn't see it, then do try to on "catch-up".
Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

I left the Croydon area 57 years ago, both because of work and that I couldn't afford to buy a house there. Familiar story? Now I couldn't afford to move back to the south-east, even if I wanted to. Which I don't. Why would I want to trade the beauty of Cornwall for the claustrophobia, and high prices, of the London area? It's the openness and fresh air that I value. Which is available to everyone, if they want it and are prepared to make the effort to get it. Which, by the way, includes all immigrants! People here judge others on how they behave. We have many more than you might imagine, both working in the NHS and elsewhere. Only yesterday I was talking to the tenant I described previously about his job, and he told me all his workmates, including his boss, come from either Latvia or Romania and cannot speak much English yet, so their communication is in sign language! They have lots of vacancies. It's heavy, dirty, smelly work at night and weather dependent. Want an application form? People stay in the south-east for the work and higher wages. Many come to Cornwall to retire. I am retired. That's the reason I am here, and not for any other that is imagined in the minds of those who seek to attribute dubious motives, just because of their own prejudices.

What job were you doing at that time? I changed career mid 60s. I was working in the City, in insurance, and also studying in the evenings, but the pay was very poor. I got married young and became a dad. We were living with my wife's family. My brother, also a Palace fan, helped me get a job with his employer as a salesman. This was better money, and provided a car, but was in the West Midlands. I didn't know that my manager at that time had been told that if I proved useless he could sack me after 2 months, so I was taking quite a big, but unseen, risk. By the time 2 months had passed, I had bought a new build house. Not for 3-4 k but for 2.2k. I remember it well! He later told me his compassion meant he wouldn't have sacked me, but fortunately he didn't want to either. In 18 months I was promoted to his No 2 and had to move again. The rest, as they say, is history.
