I'd say it's between Bert Head who was the first manager to take us into the top flight or Venables first time around with the "Team of the 80s". Malcolm Alison had great charisma etc, but took us down two divisions and despite an F.A Cup semi-final while we were in the third tier never got us a promotion. Some would argue he laid the foundations for Venables, but his achievements can't justify the award going to him.

Clearly Coppell tops the list and Est1905 is very persuasive in arguing that Venables (Team of the eighties and all that) comes second. Bert Head is obviously third as the manager who took us into the top division for the first time and kept us there against all the odds on a very modest transfer budget. ^^^^^ This. Seconded. Cyril Spiers and Arthur Rowe ( did some scouting for him) Terry Venables (best Coach) Bert Head ( although he did buy a lot of players) Steve Coppell and Steve Bruce, possibly Roy Hodgson? Perhaps us armchair fans who find the job a doddle!

Steve Bruce. Such a shame it was so short lived.

For starting the club then taking over as manager for 25 years I'd say Edmund Goodman ( for that achievement he may even shade Steve Coppell ). Bert Head, Arthur Rowe and Dick Graham also brought success and progressed the club. Big Mal for the excitement and raising our profile, followed by Venables who built on Big Mal's work. It's difficult to choose one, given that they operated at different times under different constraints.

Has to be Pardew. Achieved our only top 10 Premier League finish. Second highest finish of all time. Reached only our second ever FA cup final. Not associated with any relegations or boring sides (unlike Copell). May well keep WBA up at our expense. We really should name the new stand after him.

I want to give it to Pardew, just for his involvement in Speronis testimonial! The place erupted. Like he was as a manager he looked amazing for a few minutes and then looked exhausted and broken, but what a few minutes...
