He did bring us Don Rogers though, possibly one of the most exciting players to watch, along with Johnny Byrne, the Palace ever had.

Plus, for peanuts, McCormick and Blyth - one of our best-ever partnerships in central defence. Not forgetting, Cliff Jackson, whose many goals in the promotion seasons were crucial

Venables has to be blacklisted. He destroyed Allison's team of the eigties and our last big chance of a long stint in the top flight for personal gain and then nearly destroyed the club in his second stint demanding full payment for his contract when we went into administration. To think he is our second best manager just highlights what a terrible bunch of managers we have had.

I would put Bert Head probably at number two.

Lord Coppell, then Bert Head. What Bert did with a bunch of fairly average players was outstanding. That match against Fulham when we went up is one of the top 5 days of my life.

Totally agree, still a huge chance it would have gone tits up, but there were signs of improvement and he definitely wasn't given enough time, as you say, we'll never know now.

Edit: Oh and to answer the question Edmund Goodman, 18 years, can't argue with that. (Or Venables I suppose).

Actual Edit: That's the second time I've quoted myself when I meant to edit. I'm a t***.

What an excellent idea for a thread. Had me thinking all day.
Coppell tops by a mile.
Venables in 2nd place, became manager of a 3rd Division team in the summer of '76 and had them top of the 1st Division by Sept'79. You can't do any better than that, although he did tarnish his legacy after.
Bert Head 3rd.
I am sorry, but 2 relegations, Allison will always be bottom.[/av

Venables inherited the team of the 80s. Alison left him with a team of talented, young players. As always Venables was more interested in lining his own pockets and ripped Palace not once but twice. Absolute rogue of a man who for me got away with blue murder throughout his managerial career. Makes Harry Rednapp look like bloody Santa Claus.

I wonder if there are any here that saw Edmund Goodman, our longest serving manager. He led Palace into the Football League and got us promoted to the 2nd Division from the 3rd South.

Post war managers are dominating this thread. We had some pretty good ones pre-war as well.

"Big Mal will always be a hero too. When we played Chelsea in the cup at Stamford Bridge I was pretty terrified of the Shed's fearsome reputation for thuggery. Big Mal came out and strolled round the pitch doffing his fedora to the baying mob. He'd be on an FA charge for incitement these days."

Haha a great though at times scary day! Big Mal walked up to the Shed End and held up the fingers of both hands to show what he thought the score would be. They were howling with rage. Other than that though, two successive relegations and failure to win promotion from the old Third Division mean that for me he was a disaster. My top three are 1. Coppell, 2. Venables and 3. Head.
