I know nothing about cars/vans and recently I notice one of my wheels hub caps was missing on my van. That was about a week ago. I looked down at it today and it could be nothing but it seems like something is different about it. Is there supposed to be something on the middle nut does anyone know? I know I probably sound stupid but it was worth checking. I don't want the wheel coming off when I'm on the motorway. I was going to ask on a Brighton forum as they usually know quite a lot about nuts apparently....

I'm not great with cars meself , however if its pretty easy to flip another wheel hub off just do that to compare.
maybe somebodys had a go at nicking the wheel?

I think that middle nut holds on the brake cylinder.
It should have a split pin through it
If so then that's quite normal I reckon.

Your photo shows a castellated nut which holds the hub, to which the wheel fits on. Normally there is a dust/ protective cover over it to protect it from damage or grit and crap getting in the thread which the castellated nut fits on. The hub holds the wheel on with 4 nuts, undo those, wheel comes off. Just a note most castellated nuts have a split pin in em to stop said nut working loose and coming off. Hope that helps.

In your case, in photo, you have 5 wheel nuts not 4.

In my experience getting a wheel off a car is next to impossible and requires all sorts of tools, the strength of an ox, the planets to be in the right alignment and a good dose of porcine aviation. Alternatively I find a phone call to the AA usually does the trick.

So it doesn't seem likely to me that a wheel could come off by accident.
