The tactics in the last quarter were for WH to heave the ball up to CB and hope for a knock down. Brighton twigged and had 5 players surrounding CB every time it was punted high to him. And when he did get his head to it first there was no one in close proximity. I think even Mo Salah would have struggled to make any impact playing that way.
Sitting deep to defend a lead is perfectly understandable in our position but I don’t think it suits our strengths (or weaknesses). It worked yesterday, though only by good fortune, and it has dramatically failed in earlier games. It was squeaky bum time for 45+ mins and the nervousness pervaded the atmosphere at SP both on and off the pitch.
If we were sitting comfortably in mid table I believe we would see a very different Palace, playing with style and attacking verve to their full potential. We are one of the best of the rest, but because of the early season shambles we never got to witness what this team could do.

Everyone last week moaned at Roy for not making any subs and this week people moan about Cabaye coming off for Benteke. Made perfect sense brining Benteke on as the equalising goal we conceded last week was from a set-piece. Also, we didn’t create a single thing in the second half and perhaps a change up front was needed. Similar to Burnley, they put a man just to get in his way and the two CB’s go for the ball. So he was up against 3 players every time the ball was kicked in his direction. Any time a team put 2 or 3 players on you shows you do have some qualities- similar to when teams double up on wilf in wide areas.

I’m all up for moaning when players have been below par and Christian has been at times this season, but the word ‘scapegoat’ comes to mind if your looking to get on his back yesterday.

Well, he wasn't really, Roy just mixed the two substitutions up. Cabaye was replaced with Riedewald, who in fact came on when Loftus-Cheek went off; and Benteke replaced Loftus-Cheek, who came off when Riedewald went on. Read as Benteke for Loftus-Cheek and Riedewald for Cabaye they make more sense. Presumably the rationale was to confuse weed.

However it's correct to say that having come on Benteke was f***ing s***e.

I think that's the end of his season. If he wasn't up for it at home against weed, he won't be up for it any other time. Whether he gets moved on or Hodgson (or someone) tries to "reboot" him in the close season remains to be seen. I do wonder if we have the capacity to replace another striker in the coming window as well as all the other business we have to get done, given how frankly abysmal our transfer business was last time round. OTOH if he's going to play like this next season he can f*** off.

Well chateauferret your probably right in saying Benteke has had his final chance to barely make any contribution to any match he has played any part in.

I just hope Roy see's it that way to mate, it does look like we're going to pull ourselves away from the religation zone, but in all fairness it's a full team effort giving 100% for each other and im not talking about Benteke being a team player far from it to be honest.

From the moment Benteke came on yesterday there were no Palace players within 20 yards of him.Even winning Waynes long kicks was pointless. He did however try to chase down Brightons defenders when they were in possession.Don't really know what he is supposed to do with no support.

Thing is he didn't win any of Waynes kicks.

Am getting bored of saying it, but he was utter sh@t again yesterday.

I was asking the same question why WH kept launching the ball to Benteke on the left flank and many ended up the ball going out. Why we stopped launching the ball up field centrally for our players to attack ?

If Tekkers gets the heave ho think we will be looking at 2 strikers, meaning even if he stays we need another striker. I liked the look of Shane Long yesterday, showed some real fight in a struggling team and likes to run at the oppo with the ball like AJ. Tekkers, Sorloth, Wickham and Sako look very one dimensional. I'd let Sako go and get a Long type striker. Tekkers to stay as he is the best hold up workhorse we have at the moment.

Why would we buy a striker like Long who also never scores. We had Frazier Campbell who worked his nuts off and fans on hear wanted him gone. Surely if we are going to buy a striker, the number one quality needs to be scoring goals.

I think Roy is noticing now that when he does involve him in any match it's clearly nothing to be happy about, now there's Wilf back fit i don't see any reason for him to play for Palace again.

I think Benteke no's in himself that his time with Palace is up, time to move on to pastures new, and SP's probably thinking same if only thing's were different.

If he obviously scored the 15 he got last season or more it would have gave Roy and SP a problem with thinking shall we keep him for another season to see if he could get any better in the long run.

It's a shame really he's not done himself any favours with how it's turned out at the end of the day and moving on will be a positive thing for him for the rest of his career wherever he end's up at.

Surely this whole Benteke argument can be setlled with stats and facts?

Wilf has scored more goals in 90 mins (2nd half Bournemouth, 1st half Brighton) than Big Ben has scored all season. In total, we have 5 players who've scored more than him!
