It has been clear a number of times this season that when we are in a points position in the second half the front players are the first line of defence and hold position rather than press the opposition CB's. Wilf and Townsend were doing it in the second half before Benteke came on. When we were playing Sorloth and Benteke they both held the same position. This must be to do with maintaining the shape of the team rather than lose shape by running around chasing a lost cause.

I think he is getting a lot of stick when actually he is doing what he has probably been told to do!

His finishing on the other hand has been pretty pony!

yes I think that this was definitely the case on Saturday. He was brought on to allow Andros to drop into a more defensive role and eventually to play up top alone when Jairo came on. He was never going to get many chances in that situation and the only time we got a break-away near the end and he put Wilf in Wilf then chose to shoot rather than trying a cut-back to Tekkers in the box.

Anyone would have struggled with the job he was asked to do on Saturday so I don't blame him for his performance.
Generally though we don't want him and he doesn't want us.
I hope we bite the bullet in the Summer and part company!

No way Roy H. wish to see Benteke here next season. Cut the losses and get rid - the sooner the better (after season finished)!

This. I agree he has been pants at putting ball in the net but "fans" were giving him abuse as soon as he came on Saturday WTF is that all about?

Its the manner he does it, he literally has zero dynamism so he might as well be chasing a lost cause.

Even if he is told to not close the players down he could at least make it tougher on the opposition centre backs, play smart, make them attempt a long ball on a weaker foot, put it out for a throw in by closing down an angle etc

I saw some footage the other day of when Benteke was at Aston Villa, he was such a different player a real handful with urgency. His failure at Liverpool seems to have affected him permanently. He has the occasional good game but he seems a shadow of the player he was at Villa. I wonder if part of it is psychological, as if he doubts whether he would ever cut it at a top club again and has settled for playing at a lesser club.

Yes. A quite remarkable show of support. I don't believe any other fans in the Prem would have been anything like as positive

yes, that was right in front of me, put wilf in and didn"t get the return, wilf was on a hat trick but benteke was in a good position, anyway, i pay my money and am happy with tekkers, more to his game than scoring and hope he stays!

Apology accepted. Good on you, mate.

Boz has also apologised to me in a PM, and I have apologised to him for the tone of my reaction.

Apologies all round, then, and all is well!

Did I miss something? Why did Boz get a yellow?

I have been called an idiot, a snowflake and a racist all in one go without the name caller getting a yellow. So this seems a bit of an overreaction for someone who has always been very polite.

That would be a valid comparison if those 90 minutes were the only 90 minutes Wilf had played. He'd had a couple of poorer games leading up to that, for example. It also ignores that Benteke does other things (or is supposed to) than head balls into the net. However, comapring Wilf's season with Benteke's is like comparing dung and chocolate cake and you don't need any statistics to demonstrate that.

You really are a proper wind up merchant mate, always here to act as a supercilious 'expert' on all things.

If my point that five players (one of them a Łuc#in defender ffs) scoring more goals than Benteke isn't a reasonable argument in the "For or against Benteke" thread, I don't know what is.

Just READ other's opinions on these forums and try hard not to undermine them. They are opinions, that's all.
