There should be better out there given Jules' age but I'd still play him ahead of Hennessey and he's better than that McCarthy bloke that Pards shelled out millions for.

I think football fans tend to over-analyse goals and can't just accept it when a striker scores a good goal.
Sanchez absolutely belted the ball through Tompkins' legs and Speroni was half a second from tipping it round the post.

If Palace score we generally say "good goal" - as per Townsend's last night. If that had been against us would we be moaning at Cech's positioning?

We are going to concede goals from good shots. Where a keeper really makes a difference is commanding his box, picking out crosses and decent distribution.
Jules has always looked a little short but often catches corners and crosses.

It's time for an upgrade given his age but if we waited until the summer it's not a disaster - he's not throwing the ball in the net.

You fed me, you bred me, I'll remember your name.

Kept us in the game with a great save from Ozil - he's at his best when he doesn't have time to think. For the third goal he had too much time and did nothing - should either have made himself big like Schmeichel did against Benteke or gone to Sanchez. Might as well have not been there. Similar to Niasse's goal for Everton. As for the second goal, shouldn't be beaten at his near post. Is he up to playing 3 games in 6 days?

Indeed.

At the end of the day perhaps one can analyze every goal and find fault, even if the culpability is marginal.
Sometimes one should admire the sheer brilliance of the goal and accept that little could have been done to prevent it.

He probably saw it quite late as the ball came through Tomkins legs. And I actually think he did well to even get a hand on it so I am not assigning culpability to him.

He has served us well but like Hennessey is not a premiership keeper. In fact I prefer Hennessey, Jules was slow to both Sanchez shots and is not dominating enough in the air. I say play Wayne until we buy someone better.

Speroni has made some telling saves in the past few weeks, which have kept us in the game. The other thing he is more commanding in the box than Hennessey which is astonishing considering Hennessey's size.

Finally the back 4 are on the same wavelength as him, unlike Hennessey who's mind is god knows where. This is only my thoughts, but hell Roy is picking Speroni as his No1 for some reason...

I thought he did okay last night. The criticism for the first goal was a little harsh in my opinion. It was a good save, he pushed it wide, where was he supposed to parry it? I think kelly was a bit slow to react if anything, but that would be harsh.
He is a great ambassador for the club and I hope we find a place for him when he decides to call it a day.

I think some people on here should be a little more humble (some chance I know)
Especially given that Speroni has just played a part in our longest unbeaten run in the top flight since the Prem began and given that he's made important saves in each of those matches, i'm not sure where all this 'he's past debate' springs from. Tim Howard and Shay Given played into their 40's!

Even last night you could present a case for him being our man of the match, certainly without him we'd have been dead and buried by half-time.

I agree we need to be looking to the future in the near-term with regards a new keeper, but we've still got a very capable one between the sticks right now.

... what

Can't really think of any - not keeping out the header at Newcastle cost is a point. What about the Everton debacle? Also, don't understand the comment about commanding his area as he stays on his line an awful lot.

Daft thread. Speroni has Kelly one side and Schlupp the other - doesn't take much to figure out that in a game he'll be exposed.

Former Arsenal stopper Jens Lehmann emphasises the importance of organisation and bossing the penalty area (not just the goal area) in his newly-published autobiography
