In fact Homo Sapiens seem to have originated from central Africa and migrated with adaptation providing lighter skin tones. Homo Neanderthal was a fairly wide spread hominid and almost certainly would have had different skin tones, formed by exposure to different skin tones. In fact the evidence seems to suggest that only some were close to what we'd call Caucasian. Its even debatable whether or not the neanderthal's extinction was due to homo sapians (and there are strong arguements, that infact the two are part of the same species - and that modern humans are decended from a hybrid of Homo Sapian and Neanderthal).
