FA Adopts Rooney Rule

I once got an interview via the 2 ticks scheme (guarantees an interview for those with a disability should your application meet the min requirements). It was such a waste of time for everyone as it was clear they wasn't actually going to hire me and was just ticking a box.

Exactly my earlier point.

Rather than have the "token" to meet the quota better to deepen and broaden the gene pool. I suspect most managers get jobs because they are "known". So how do you get on the "known" list.

What if Mark Bright suggested to Steve Parish a young BME manager in the lower leagues. Let's say over time Parish keeps an eye on him and is impressed. When the next vacancy comes up he's on the shortlist not because he is the token but because he has become "known" to the club. That still doesn't get him the job but at least when he walks into the interview he doesn't get "who are you?"

Whilst I think the Rooney rule has its shortcomings one thing I hope we can all agree on. There is a managerial merry go round full of the usual suspects. Maybe this will force clubs to re-evaluate their recruitment process not just for diversity but to give those not on the "known list" a chance.

The usual suspects will eventually disappear so new blood will come on the scene.
It can't happen overnight but again like you say will it be ability or colour that gets them into a job.
Also are women not entitled to apply as there are plenty in the game.(not on the game !).

Like anyone who wants a career always used to do - you get in at the bottom level, prove yourself and gradually work your way up the ladder as your competence and experience increased until such time as you become a valid and worthwhile candidate for the cream of the crop jobs.

It's how I and many others built our CV's and careers, and gives the employer a good overall view of your abilities and capabilities over a period of time - by which time you WILL have become a 'known' contender.

No, no, no. You're doing it all wrong! You have to be in a particular box, or a certain rung on the SJW privilege ladder.. then you have the right to be interviewed for the job.

Another reason why the Rooney Rule "works" in the NFL is because there are no non-American/Canadian coaches. There are no Contis/Mourinhos/Silvas/Pelligrinos challenging for jobs. You are much more likely to get a manager from an African country than, say, a John Barnes. Garry Thompson was a manger for a bit but what happened to former players who were touted as managerial material like Des Walker or Carlton Fairweather? Sweet Fanny Adams let them wither on the vine. I'd be much more impressed if the FA had coaching outreach programs to identify potential talent rather than saying they'll interview one or two for each vacant position. As for the NFL, at the moment there are two head coaches, Mike Tomlin of Pittsburgh and Todd Bowles of the NY Jets who are black. The one black general manager, Jerry Reese, was recently fired by the 3-13 NY Giants.

That's completely incorrect, in addition to Bowles and Tomlin you have:

Vance Joseph (Broncos)
Hue Jackson (Browns)
Anthony Lynn (Chargers)
Marvin Lewis (Bengals)

In terms of GMs you have:

Chris Grier (Dolphins)
Ozzie Newsome (Ravens)
Reggie McKenzie (Raiders)

 


Employee of the month is a good example of how someone can be both a winner and a loser at the same time.
